Topic: Furcraea

In the News (Fri 17 Feb 12)

  2005-11-PlantHighl.html
The genus Furcraea is closely related to Agave, but it is a much smaller group: 20 species plus an additional variety are listed in a 2001 write-up on the genus.
Furcraeas differ, however, in having pendulous flowers, which are always white or greenish-white.
The large leaves of Furcraea selloa are green (edged with yellow in the case of our variegated specimen), sword-shaped, and armed with sharp teeth along the edges.

The Abbey Garden : Articles: Furcraea
The spread and increase of the furcraea, however, is guaranteed.
The furcraea has been in cultivation in the gardens since 1894, so despite the magnificence of its flowering, the event initself is not extraordinary.
The furcraea is a noble foliage plant, whose large, glaucous rosettes greatly enhance both the exotic feel of the garden and the natural colours and contrasts of surrounding plants.

It is hardy to about 25 degrees F. Although many sources list Furcraea roezlii as a synonym with Furcraea bedinghausii we have opted to continue listing this plant as Furcraea roezlii.
In Mary and Gary Irish’s book “Agaves, Yuccas and Related Plants” Furcraea roezlii is described and said to differ from Furcraea bedinghausii because the later has shorter leaves and a shorter trunk.
Urs Eggli, in "Illustrated Handbook of Succulent Plants: Monocotyledons" combines the two and further notes that noted Agave author Bernd Ullrich has suggested that Furcraea bedinghausii may be a subspecies of the closely related Furcraea longaeva (Ullrich B. El complejo Furcraea longaeva II.
