Body Pterylosis of Woodcreepers and Ovenbirds (Dendrocolaptidae and Furnariidae)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Furnariidae have radiated into an astonishing diver- sity of niches, having adapted to arboreal and terres- trial habitats from deep forest to open desert, and from coastal sand dunes and cliffs to above treeline in the Andes.
The Dendrocolaptidae have been separated from the Furnariidae on the basis of additional syringeal features, particularly the horns on the processi vocales of woodcreepers that are lack- ing in all ovenbirds except Geositta.
In summary, the body pterylosis of the Dendro- colaptidae and Furnariidae is entirely consistent within their respective groups.

Auk, The: Phylogenetic analysis of the nest architecture of neotropical ovenbirds (Furnariidae)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The suboscine family Furnariidae, with 240 currently recognized biological species, is among the most morphologically, behaviorally, and ecologically diverse families of passerines (Ridgely and Tudor 1994, Skutch 1996).
We assumed that the Furnariidae and the Dendrocolaptidae are each monophyletic and are sister taxa, based on the Sibley and Ahlquist (1990) DNA-DNA hybridization hypothesis.
The hypothesized sister group to the Furnariidae + Dendrocolaptidae is a clade composed of the Formicariidae, Conopophagidae, and Rhinocryptidae (i.e.

HBW. Family Pages: Family Texts (Sample Text)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Molecular data clearly indicate that the woodcreepers diverged relatively recently from the ovenbirds (Furnariidae), with the split probably occurring during the Miocene.
In contrast, the Furnariidae appear not to be monophyletic with respect to woodcreepers.
The issue of whether to rank woodcreepers as a separate family has been questioned recently by M. Irestedt and colleagues, whose estimated phylogeny based on both nuclear and mitochondrial DNA suggested that the furnariid leaftossers (Sclerurus) are basal both to woodcreepers and to all other ovenbirds.

Stripe-breasted Spinetail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This species is a fairly common resident breeder in hill forest, and in Tobago also occurs in lowland and scrub habitats.
It is a member of the South American bird family Furnariidae, a group in which many species build elaborate clay nests, giving rise to the English name for the family of "ovenbirds".
However, Stripe-breasted Spinetail constructs a spherical stick nest with a tubular entrance low in a bush, into which its two greenish white eggs are laid.

THE NEST AND NESTING ECOLOGY OF ACROBATORNIS FONSECAI (FURNARIIDAE), WITH IMPLICATIONS FOR INTRAFAMILIAL RELATIONSHIPS
Nest architecture and placement have been considered important in judging systematic relationships in the Neotropical family Furnariidae (Vaurie 1971, 1980), and we concur that data on nests, at least insofar as definition of basic nest-type, are desirable in any analysis of intrafamilial relationships of this complex assemblage of birds.
We suspect that powerful environmental factors in place for prolonged periods would be required for evolution and establishment of such energetically expensive, sex-shared (i.e., nests are not sexually selected structures), nest architecture across the broad group of furnariids in which the behavior is prevalent today.
Nests, constructed of twigs and sticks, are single-chambered, well-lined with mosses and leaves (one examined in detail), and situated in the canopy of tall trees.

 Merge Dendrocolaptidae and Furnariidae
The controversy has two components: a trivial one on whether each group "deserves" family or subfamily rank, and an important one on whether the two groups are reciprocally monophyletic.
: Irestedt et al.'s (2002) DNA sequence data indicated that Furnariidae was paraphyletic with respect to the Dendrocolaptidae because Sclerurus was basal to Dendrocolaptidae + rest of Furnariidae.
The other solution is to simply revert to earlier treatments that recognize only a single family, Furnariidae and to also abandon subfamily ranks for woodcreepers and ovenbirds.

 AllRefer.com - ovenbird (Vertebrate Zoology) - Encyclopedia
ovenbird, common name for a member of the family Furnariidae, primitive passerine birds, which build elaborate, domed nests of clay or dig tunnels in the ground to lay their eggs.
The North American ovenbird is not a member of this group, but is a warbler.
True ovenbirds are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Aves, order Passeriformes, family Furnariidae.

Among the outstanding features of this small, arboreal form are: fl-and-gray definitive plumage lacking any rufous; juvenal plumage markedly different from adult; stout, bright-pink legs and feet; and its acrobatic foraging behavior involving almost constant inverted hangs on foliage and scansorial creeping along the undersides of canopy limbs.
This remarkable new furnariid and the secrets it holds for elucidation of phylogeny, evolutionary history, speciation patterns, and zoogeography, if not safeguarded immediately, when its habitat is still for sale, could disappear in the coming decade.

Forget tanagers and toucans; it is the suboscines, the antbirds (Formicariidae, in the broad sense) and ovenbirds (Furnariidae) and the like, dull in plumage but of fascinating biology, that captivate many a field ornithologist with experience in the Neotropics.
Yet most of what is known about these birds, what little there is, has remained scattered in the primary literature.
