EX-GOVERNOR ROBERT W. Robert Wilkinson Furnas was born on a farm near Troy, Miami county, Ohio, May 5, 1824, being a son of William and Martha (Jenkins) Furnas, both natives of Newberry, South Carolina, where the father was born in 1804 and the latter in 1800.
Furnas was commissioned by the then acting governor J. Sterling Morton, colonel of the territorial militia and was afterward commissioned, by acting governor A. Paddock, brigadier general in the same service for the district south of the Platte River.
Furnas was special agent for the United States pension bureau, and was a member of the first board of regents of the University of Nebraska, a portion of the time being president of the board.

She was born on December 10, 1884, in Canton, OH and was married to Carl Furnas in September of 1910.
Furnas was employed as a vise hand at Allis-Chambers, but over the course of twenty-one years he advanced to the position of assistant works manager.
The Furnas Foundation donated $300,000 ($100,000 per year for three years) toward the creation of a "library without walls." The library was formally dedicated to Leto M. Furnas in an official dedication ceremony on October 6, 1987, in what is now known as the Leto M. Furnas Information Resource Center.

My great-grandfather Furnas was a doctor in Stevens Co. during the early history of Kansas, practicing at Lafayette, a town which was organized in late 1886 by a group of Friends, also known as Quakers, earnest hard-working people.
Dr. Robert Furnas, like all early day physicians, rode horseback, or drove a buggy many long weary miles in answer to calls that came at all hours, in all kinds of weather.
My father spent many summers with his grandfather, Doctor Furnas, and was there during one of the dreaded early day 'prairie fires.' After fighting for two days and nights, with little or no food, in his weakened condition, he fell face downward into the fire, as he tried to jump across it.

Furnas, a Brownville native became Nebraska's second governor in 1872.
The Governor Furnas Arboretum was planted in 1992 - 93 as a part of a major arboretum development project designed and partially funded by the Nebraska State Wide Arboretum's Community Landscape Improvement Program.
Together with J. Morton Sterling, Furnas helped promote the planting of trees across Nebraska and in 1874 while Furnas was governor, he signed a proclamation declaring a day of tree planting as Arbor Day.

Thick pumice deposits on the flank of the volcano are probably the result of caldera-forming eruptions.
Furnas is a stratovolcano with a large summit caldera about 4 miles (6 km) in diameter and 1,000-1,200 feet (300-400 m) deep.
It lasted about a week and was on the south rim of the caldera, at the Pico de Areia vent.
