The median income for a household in the county was $30,498, and the median income for a family was $37,000.

Initiative 300 is Nebraska's constitutional ban on non-family corporate ownership of farming operations.
Furnas County Farms, which employs 375 people in Nebraska and is the largest hog producer in the state and 15th largest in the nation, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in May. One of the reasons cited for the bankruptcy was barriers caused by I-300.
Furnas filed a motion in bankruptcy court May 21 seeking approval of the sale.

That's because Furnas -- a division of Sand Livestock Systems Inc. of Columbus -- filed for bankruptcy last year, leaving the trio to try to collect from the insurance companies that issued policies for the Furnas, Sand and their two former top executives.
The case began in 2001, when Furnas was trying to build an operation to hold 44,000 hogs in the northwest part of Hayes County.

When Robert W. Furnas became governor in 1873, the Legislature adopted an act to organize an area along the Kansas border and name this latest county in his honor.
The Secretary of State issued certificates of election of officials in Arapahoe and ruled that settlement to be the county seat.
The courthouse was dismantled the following year and after the county offices were housed in various downtown buildings for two years, the current courthouse was dedicated on May 4, 1951.

The beginning of Oxford was on December 20, 1879, when William Gillan was given his "final receivers receipt" and handed abstract title No. 767 for certain lands at the eastern edge of Furnas County.
The arrival of the first train as it crossed the Harlan County line into Oxford was greeted with a large crowd of onlookers, February 17, 1880.
In June 1884 a petition, signed by 23 citizens, was presented to the commissioners of Furnas County.
