 Cape Barren Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cape Barren Island is located off the north east coast of Tasmania, Australia, and is one of the islands of the Furneaux Group in Bass Strait.
The largest island of the group, Flinders Island, lies to the north, with the smaller Clarke Island to the south.
Cape Barren, with the other islands in the Furneaux group, are a popular destination for sea kayakers who try to cross the Bass Strait from the Australian mainland to the Tasmanian mainland.

 About Flinders Island
The island was first identified by Europeans when Tobias Furneaux, the commander of Captain Cook’s support ship, became separated from the Endeavour in fog and discovered the Furneaux group of islands on 19 march 1773.
The last sealing licences were issued in 1828, after the collapse of the sealing industry a few of the sealers and their wives settled on the islands around the Furneaux group.
The climate in the Furneaux group is maritime.

Another area of concern of the proposed change is the lands involvement in the recent land planning review and rezoning of the Furneaux group.
It would leave the Furneaux group with portions of land that would be excluded from any further land-use planning inclusion, and I feel all land should have the same value to everyone concerning these issues.
I'm on the regional strategy committee for the Furneaux group, and it just feels funny having half of those islands within a management group and having plans and then identifying any areas that need to be looked after, and not having any known interaction with any organisation that is managing it.

We were heading for an interesting part of the Furneaux group today, Kent Bay on Cape Barren Island.
This was one of the first places to be inhabited by Europeans because of the rich marine life in the area, notably seals and whales.,Unfortunately neither survived the onslaught.
Mick was offered the use of their radio phone to contact his wife, to let them know everything was OK. Mick clambered aboard and within minutes had made contact.
