A Democratic Congressman and U.S. Senator, Furnifold M. Simmons was born on January 20, 1854 to Furnifold Green, Jr., and Mary McLendel Jerman Simmons of Jones County, North Carolina.
Simmons, a member of a prosperous farm family, was educated at an academy in Wake Forest and attended Trinity College (now Duke University).
Although Simmons after thirty years in the Senate misunderstood a younger generation of politicians, he lost his Senatorial seat to Bailey primarily because he deserted Alfred Smith in 1928 and because he was in office when America’s economic depression began.

Simmons kept the issue of African American officeholders, whom he portrayed as corrupt and unqualified for office, at the forefront of the campaign.
In recognition of his political skills, and as a reward for his service to the party, Simmons was nominated by the Democrats for a senatorial seat in 1900.

Born near Pollocksville in Jones County on land where his family had lived since the early 1700s, Simmons graduated from Trinity College in 1873, at which point he moved first to Goldsboro and then to New Bern to commence the practice of law.
Simmons served in the United States House of Representatives from 1887 to 1889 but lost his bid for reelection to Henry P. Cheatham, an African American.
In the Senate Simmons chaired the Finance Committee, 1913-1919, during the Woodrow Wilson administration.

Jones County was the birthplace of a great political leader, Furnifold McLendel Simmons, born in 1854.
Simmons was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1886 and later was elected to the Senate.
In the Administration of President Wilson, he chaired the Senate Finance Committee and co-authored the War Revenue Act to finance U.S. involvement in World War I. His fifth term in the Senate was won by the largest re-election margin ever granted to a North Carolinian.
