  Furry Lewis
Furry, as he was called by his childhood friends, developed an interest in music before he reached the age of 10.
Furry had continued playing alongside the street musicians over the years, but with the newfound craze of Folk and Blues music, the time was right for his "Rediscovery." Two albums worth of material were recorded for the Folkways and Prestige labels, both released in 1961.
Lewis hated the song and felt that since he was the subject of it, he deserved royalties from Mitchell.

Furry Lewis was the only blues singer of the 1920s to achieve major media attention in the 1960s and '70s.
Lewis built his first guitar when he was still a child from scraps he found around the family's home.
The songs proved that Lewis was a natural in the recording studio, playing to the microphone as easily as he did to audiences in person, but they were not, strictly speaking, representative of Lewis's usual sound, because they featured two backup musicians.

Furry always had contempt for delicate fingerpickers who were "afraid of their guitars" and to prove his point Furry would "beat the demons" out of his guitar and used his bottleneck stylings as the alter-ego to his dark and often menancing voice.
Furry claimed he was mentored by early jazz legend W.C. Handy and many of his renditions of the popular standards of the early 20th century bear out this influence.
Furry's lyrical imagery of steam engines, card sharks, jail houses, corrupt judges, bail bondsmen, wanton women and the life of a "rambling man" give us rare window into the lives ordinary people in the early part of the last century.

Furry Lewis with Bukka White & Gus Cannon CD Review
Although his recorded legacy lacks quantity, Walter "Furry" Lewis has had a major impact on the Memphis blues scene and the rest of the blues world still felt today.
An original in the way he improvised his own lyrics in traditional songs, as well as showing an incredible sense of humor about human relationships, Lewis, who was also a presence playing slide guitar, should be best remembered for linking the 19th century traditional and ragtime pieces to the world of blues.
One of the early country blues artists to garner attention for his fiery interpretations of traditional and ragtime pieces, Lewis-who often played an old sunburst Gibson J45-got his first opportunity to record in 1927, and most of his reputation is built on this early period's recordings for Vocalion and Victor.

One of the greatest blues storytellers and slide guitarists of them all, Furry Lewis recorded several sides in the 1920s, and would probably have been relegated to history if not for George Mitchell, the musicologist who set about recording Memphis bluesmen in the early '60s.
Mitchell's recordings brought Lewis the well-deserved attention of a new generation of fans obsessed with Delta blues.
And though Lewis was not a rich man when he died in 1981, he enjoyed the status of local legend, played on national TV, and even opened for the Rolling Stones.

Furry's accompaniment is extremely active behind his singing; in fact, what he is playing would be very sporting to play as an instrumental.
