Furry fandom - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Furry fandom is an artistic and literary genre that celebrates the hybridization of human and animal traits and characteristics, specifically in cartoons and comics.
Some other communities, such as the "were" or "therian" communities, share similar beliefs with furry lifestylers but wish to distance themselves from the term “furry,” as they are not necessarily interested in furry fandom or do not wish to have their beliefs trivialized by association with a "cartoon" fandom.
Protests have been made by members of the furry fandom against what they regard as "distasteful, unrelated, or deviant aspects" of the fandom, in particular by groups such as the "Burned Furs" (a protest group of the 1990's who felt their work and image was being seriously harmed by increased sexual aspects within the Fandom).

Furries are disturbing due to the intricate, full-body suits—known as fursuits—every furry will eventually build one and most will only have sex with them on, often while using tickling furshampoo.
Furries claim to be born the way they are, like fags, but they're actually just delusional and chose to be furry to fit in with someone, as every other subculture has rejected them.
Furries are frequently mocked and featured on Something Awful and the Portal of Evil, where the worst of the worst are showcased and ridiculed.

 Nicodemus' Fursuit Pages: About Furry
Furry fandom is usually considered to be a subcategory of Fantasy fandom (fans of fantasy fiction and such), but people sometimes associate it with SF fandom (science- fiction fandom) or Anime fandom (Japanese animation fandom) as well.
Fandoms are sometimes quite large (such as SF fandom, which is all fans of science fiction) and are sometimes quite specific (Dave Barry fandom, those people who are avid readers and enthusiasts of Dave Barry).
Other fandoms, such as furry fandom, are self-selective groups; you are a member of the fandom if you are interested in the subject and want to be part of activities.

 Furry fandom - WikiFur
Furry fandom is also used to refer to the community of artists, writers, role players and general fans of the furry art forms who gather on the net and at conventions.
Furry hate groups have been created that ridicule the fandom at every opportunity and continue the spread of various types of misinformation, largely based on overplaying activities that exist in the fringe areas of the community and have no direct relationship to the fandom.
Other furries will then turn on those who claim not to want to be associated with every controversial element in the community and accuse them of being a detriment to the stability of the community, often accompanied with accusations of Nazi behavior or being a Burned Fur.

Most people who use the term “Furry” to refer to themselves are very unhappy about this association of the term and beg the world’s understanding that they have no control over who adopts the term “Furry,” and that they do not wish to be confused with sexual deviants or accused of sharing their interests.

Of course, a fandom is defined by the fans, and it's practically impossible for such a diverse group to agree on a concise definition of much of anything.
The core definition of a "furry" seems to include basically humanoid-formed creatures with animal faces, fur/scale/feathers/whatever, and often appropriate tails, wings, claws, etc., able to speak, and with a human-like personality, though quite often with "quirks" hinting at the real-life animal upon which the character is based.
This is largely because of the baggage the term "furry" carries with it, as a number of people see "furries" obsessed with the sexuality of their fictitious characters.

Some members of the fandom believe that modern Furry is simply a current expression of the age-old belief in animal spirits and lycanthrope transformation that is found in cultural histories around the world.
In the last decade, this formerly underground aspect of the fandom has grown enormously, and may be linked to the similar explosion in the population of the Fandom, which in turn was almost certainly sparked by the growth of the Internet.
Beyond socialization, the fandom is also a sexual outlet for many who have found it difficult to find others with their particular mixture of fetishes.
