Furry lifestyler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Furry lifestylers generally refer to themselves as furries or furs, although this term is not exclusive to them.
Some furry lifestylers have a general dysmorphia, a strong, deeply rooted feeling that they are not in the right body.
The phrases "furry lifestyle" and "furry lifestyler" first appeared in July 1996 on the newsgroup alt.fan.furry during an ongoing dispute within that community.

 Urban Dictionary: furry
Furries range from being harmless fans fascinated by anthropomorphic characters and animals, to immensely withdrawn or self-abosrbed persons who actually believe, or want to believe, they're eagle-winged fox-like versions of themselves with giant gentalia who wouldn't dare be anything else that could be considered mundane.
Furry fans, sometimes referred to as furries or furs for short, are eager for more material than is available from mainstream publishers.
Some furries are quite fond of (read again: not always yiff) plushies and, less commonly, dressing up in a fursuit that either depicts their fursona/favorite animal or just a giant plushie.

 Furry lifestyle - WikiFur
The furry lifestyle, lived by those who call themselves lifestylers involves a more pronounced expression of what the Furry Fandom means to them in real life through their actions and beliefs.
Furry lifestylers have a few distinct subgroups, such as the barepaws and the old TLKIAWOLers (A Lion King oriented version of FIAWOL or Fandom Is A Way Of Life).
While a few weres or therians may also live a furry lifestyle, the majority tend to ignore or look down upon lifestylers and even the furry subculture as a whole.

 Personal furry - WikiFur
A personal furry is a fursona that the player identifies with on a deeper and more personal level than the typical roleplaying character.
This may include the physical description of a furry, the character's beliefs, moods, and temperaments, and all stories that support and expand the understanding of the furry character.
While a personal furry is often seen as a natural fit for lifestylers, it's important to note that ideas such as furry lifestyle and animal totemism are not intrinsically linked to the concept.

 Furry lifestyler - WikiFur
A furry lifestyler is one who lives a furry lifestyle.
This is distinct from the notion of being a furry fan, who, by contrast, can choose to 'not be furry' at times.
The term is also used to describe those who choose to participate in furry activities, yet are perceived as not being truly furry (a highly subjective evaluation).

 Stereotypes - WikiFur
It seems in part because of this, the stereotype of the Furry fan often bears a close resembelence to general stereotype of the nerd and/or geek: a hairy, overweight male, often unwashed, and living in his parents' basement while surfing for pornography on the Internet.
It is also pointed out, that the image of a Furry fan who is mainstream, has mostly unremarkable interests and hobbies, and sociable is not as titillating to the sensationalism seekers in the general public, or groups such as Something Awful.
These stereotypes are sometimes based on combinations of the behavior of the Furry fan him or herself and the stereotypical attributes of various animals (not all of which may, in fact, be accurate to the factual traits of particular animals).

Description: Many Furry Fans roleplay [online] as a character which is a certain [anthropomorphic] animal, and not necessarily because this animal has deep spiritual meaning for them, or because they feel they are personally other than human- although furry fans commonly feel that being something physically other than human could be fun.
Connection: To some Furry Fans, their connection to their Furry persona ("fursona") is that of a roleplayer and their roleplaying character, or that of an author to their book's protagonist or their alter ego, or that of an actor to their given character.

I have always viewed the entire Were and Furry communities, and the whole idea of animal association to be somewhat akin to a sliding scale, or continuous spectrum.

The third group, the Furry Lifestylers, is much harder to try and classify, as it crosses both areas of grey.

There is furry art, furry music, a group of yearly conventions mainly on the American coasts, troupes of "fursuiters" specializing in costumes, and even puppet theater.
Furries, the fandom's members, cite historical tradition for their group: Aesop's fables, the Amerindian Coyote, Egyptian animal-headed gods, the Japanese kitsune (fox spirits), and the American Wile E. Coyote.

Of course, when you are a furry, it does tend to effect a larger sphere of your personality and preferences, or perhaps its the personality and preferences that draw someone to Furry.
This is much like the spiritual/psychological aspect of furries, such as Furry Lifestylers although is more centered around "feral" or non-anthropomorphic animals.

The term originates from science-fiction fandom and was used to describe people for whom participation in a fandom was a primary component of their lifestyle.
FIAWOL has been observed to be especially fitting for some parts of Furry fandom, because of the presence of Furry Lifestylers.
However, some point out that FIAWOL in furry does not just apply to those with beliefs and practices that mirror those of Furry Lifestylers - many people who might describe themselves as just fans of Furry art and role-play still base much of their lifestyle around Furry media, events, and conventions.

However, some people dispute this, opining that furs are, as a rule, more likely than the general population to accept non-heterosexual orientations and that this, rather than any real difference in numbers, accounts for the perception.

I was going to write a bit of a piece about they whys and wherefores of the whole dispute and aggravation, but then I found that Allen Kitchen's excellent article "No FurTher Debate Please" in the e-zine "Fuzzy Logic" had beaten me to it.
Adding to Allen's article, from my perspective the "Burned Fur vs Lifestyler" business in the fandom is yet another product of too many people taking a fun thing too seriously, plus the maxim that the bigger the group, the more nutters come out of the woodwork - on both sides.
I find the concept of a "furry lifestyle" to be an oxymoron at best, and a case of self-delusion at worst - but then, most ordinary people find me a bit weird, so whatever rocks your boat...!

Very little serious research has been done into furriness, but one American study a few years ago reported a figure of around 50% bisexual, with the remainder split fairly equally between gay and straight.
There are several theories as to why this is so, but the fact that furs are generally accepting of widely diverse lifestyles (we're a broad church; we have to be, really) might well have an influence here.
Not true at all: there is a bias towards youth in what you might call the "visible" furry community, but a lot of that has to do with the fact that the internet plays such a big role.
