While Fury doesn't boast the expressionistic imagery of his German work, the 1936 film is not the least bit creaky and more importantly a timeless examination of human nature.
Fury is an extension of the dark and hostile world view Lang demonstrated in M. The big difference is that M's star was guilty from the beginning, while Fury star Joe Wilson (Spencer Tracy) is innocent until he's put in a position where his human nature "makes" him act unjustly.
Fury is the kind of movie that should be shown in schools, one of the foremost places where gossip runs rampant and lives can be forever altered because of it.

The movie was adapted by Bartlett Cormack and Fritz Lang from the story Mob Rule by Norman Krasna.

Fury (1936)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Fury is a fine exploration (although not an analysis) of the mentality of vengeance, whether from a mob, as in the first half of the film, or from an individual, as in the latter half.
So Fury was certainly pertinent to our culture at the time, and was one of many films to come, such as Mervyn LeRoy's They Won't Forget (1937) that centered on strong anti-lynching sentiments (believe it or not, there were also pro-lynching films, such as Cecil B. DeMille's This Day and Age, 1933).
Fury's structure is very unusual, contributing even more to its unpredictable, captivating nature.

FURY is German director Fritz Lang's first American movie, and it's a powerful opening shot.
"Fury" gives the impression of looking at the laws and customs of the United States through foreign eyes, which, of course, it is, but I don't know if Lang meant that to be so evident.
The fury of the mob is transferred to its victim, and, although Joe's anger is more justified, "Fury" asserts that it is just as corrosive.

 dOc DVD Review: Fury (1936)
Though we may not think much of it now, mob justice and lynchings were part of the landscape in the early decades of the 20th century.
Fury is the story of two characters, really: Joe Wilson (Spencer Tracy) and the town of Strand, where the action takes place.
Fury was legendary director Fritz Lang's first American film after escaping Nazi Germany, and he produced a fierce, if somewhat compromised, film about mob rule and American life, with a cynical, pessimistic ending that the standard Hollywood ending can't hide.

 DVD Verdict Review - Fury
As Bogdanovich also states, it's "a compromised film," but it's also a dark meditation on some characteristically Langian themes: the terrifying amorality of a mob, the indifference of fate, the madness of revenge, and the fragility of the bonds that tie both people and societies together.
Lang's critique of revenge as a mad, empty pursuit is the main point of interest here, culminating in a final speech by Joe that manages to provide an ending that is both happy, in a way, and deeply unconsoling.
Bogdanovich doesn't seem very interested in Fury itself, which he sees as a film fatally lacking in focus due to the compromises that Lang was forced to make at MGM.

This is in keeping with Lang's idea that the most authentic of movies are those that are most like documentaries.
It is a moving picture of America in 1933 (1936): what it looked and felt like; how people dressed and talked; what cars they drove; how telephones worked, and many other details that cannot be appreciated when viewed individually in a book, library, or museum.
Actors' faces fill the screen, looking directly at the audience as they speak, pulling us into the movie; leaving no doubt for whom the dialogue is meant.

In some movies, we see an event happen, we see an on-screen photographer taking films of that event, and then we later see the films that he has shot.
It serves also to blur the distinction between film as the creator of romantic fictions and film as the recorder of actual events; a useful tactic for this part-didactic, part-sentimental movie.
And finally, it brings back and amplifies those very disturbing lynch-mob sequences that by this time in the movie we, the audience, are already trying to forget.

Lang had wanted to make a movie against mob justice, and he helped develop the script from a four-page outline into a full-fledged movie, even though he spoke little English.
As a whole, Fury is neither as impressive nor as important as M or Metropolis.
So Fury may not be a cinematic “essential.” But it does mark an important milestone in the career of one of the great directors of silent and sound cinema.

The Swine who Rewrote F. Scott Fitzgerald: Joseph L. Mankiewicz as Producer
Curiously, Mankiewicz's notions of what he thought movies should be are almost as evident in the films he merely produced for Mayer as in those he himself later wrote and directed.
Fury was his first real production at MG-M. So he supported Lang unrelentingly against unrelenting hatred – not only from Metro executives but from virtually the entire cast and crew, Sylvia Sidney notably excepted.
Among the women was Joan Crawford, “the prototype movie star”, in Mankiewicz's words, and Mankiewicz's ability to handle the temperamental terror was part of his value to the studio.

Fritz Lang's FURY (from 1936) holds up surprisingly well.
This was Lang's first film in America, and given its very pro-and-con stance about the American character--which does not seem to have changed much in 70 years; will it ever?--I'm surprised that that Fritz was allowed another chance to direct (I guess this film must have made some money).
That the movie was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (it's about as different an MGM film as you'll encounter until maybe "Bad Day at Black Rock" or the glossier "Rogue Cop" two decades later) is another surprise.
