:: MVRemix: Album Reviews - Fuse One - Gypsy Radio ::
Fuse shows a lot of promise conceptually, but the album’s dark vibe tends to drag on, leaving the listener yearning for some variety.
Lyrically there is no question Fuse One is a talented emcee who is able to produce deep and meaningful verses, but translating this into making memorable songs is a lot harder to do.
And while Fuse intended “Gypsy Radio” to be dark, haunting and depressing, for future releases he will have to show a little more variety in sounds and not just stick to one distinct mood or vibe.

 Rarebird's Cheap Trick Reviews
Although the music of Fuse bears little resemblance to that of their future band, the presence of Nielsen and Petersson is evident and distinctive throughout; the two clearly had remarkable chemistry from the start.
In 2001, the album was finally released on CD in the U.S. with two bonus tracks from the band's first single: a garage-rock version of the classic "Hound Dog", and its band-written B-side "Cruisin' For Burgers".
This had a noticeable effect on the band's chemistry; the four albums they recorded without him were inferior to the ones that came before, and their popularity faded.

 The Vault
The seminal, pioneering 1987 solo album from Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare, 'Rhythm Killers' was the first album to fuse reggae, dub and rock together into a dance sound that the mainstream public could embrace.
In retrospect the tight, complex rhythms of this album are all the more amazing given that it was produced in 1987 without recourse to sequencer overdose, simply bass, guitar, keyboards and rhythm.
The overall feel of the album is incredibly uplifting, funky and mellow, the perfect pre-club party music, post-club sunrise accompaniment, or afternoon tunes for dancing in Queens Park.

Las Vegas Mercury: CDVS: D:Fuse VS. Gabriel & Dresden
Texas-based D:Fuse has made a few mix albums of note over the past few years--including one for Paul Oakenfold's Perfecto label--and so Begin is refreshing in that all its artistic statements are purely his own, including the songwriting.
And since this is a non-mix album, he's strategized everything from synth fills to the tracklisting, all in accordance to the atmosphere he's looking to establish.
Dave Dresden and Josh Gabriel's first proper compilation might've just been an artist album as well, but in order to create a specific mood, they included both tracks they had no hand in producing, or altered some of their previous works to fit in with other inclusions.

Fuse offers a fascinating glimpse into the musical beginnings of Rick Nielsen and Tom Peterson before superstardom beckoned as members of Cheap Trick, but it also stands on its own as a prime example of keyboard driven psychedelic pop, circa 1969.
Signed to GandP Records, the album entered the Billboard album charts Top 200 and featured the single "Breaking My Heart." Thrills followed up their critical and commercial success the next year with their sophomore effort Front Page News, featuring the single "Tonight," now considered one of the classic AOR songs of all time.

But the album's greatest marvel is "Great Lake," which begins, "Terri comes in laughing, shakes her coat off, and I just can't bear to look." The song only gets better from there, thanks to a liquid bass line and Henry's ability to squeeze four conflicting emotions from the repeated use of one key word.
This is the album where Joe Henry stepped out of the shadows of alt country and delivered as good an album as you will find in contemporary pop music.
With Fuse, Henry has stepped even further away from his country roots, with lyrics that are much more abstract, vocals that are largely stripped of emotion, and music that, although dark, has a quality that reminded me a lot of 80's pop -- stale and dated.

They're one of my favorite bands, and their Highway to Hell album is the best rook and roll album ever made--great music, great lyrics and it's catchier than hell.
The first video from Blow My Fuse, "Cold Blood," was one of the most requested clips of 1988, and exposed many new fans to the straight-out stomp of Kix.
Unfortunately, since it was shot too late, MTV didn't air it very often, and the band couldn't capitalize on the strength of the song--one of Kix's best cuts and a highlight of their live show.

Apparently, this album represents a big change from prior "Joe Henry" offerings, which were more along the lines of alt-country, roots-rock.
Generally, the music on "Fuse" has the feel of beat poetry set to a bluesy urban groove, with touches of jazz augmenting the basic sound.
Throughout "Fuse," the songs are built upon a bass groove, delivered on some songs by Jennifer Condos, and on most other tracks by Ready Freddie Washington.

His new “Fuse” album is loaded with tales from the shadowy margins of the human psyche, where even the motives of angels are in question.
It was there, in his garage studio, that the recording of "Fuse” began last year with a single obsession: to secure hip-hop master Dr. Dre to produce.
And when he later began work on his "Murder of Crows" album, he saw his plans for a raw update on Dylan's "Basement Tapes" usurped by a producer who was aiming for a bigger '80s rock sound.

D: Fuse brought producer/DJ/musician Mike Hiratzka to the stage, armed with a guitar, bass and a unique vintage keyboard to take the tracks up a notch: adding new flavors to the rhythm, illustrating the melodies, and riding the track transitions.
