Method to produce fused quartz particulates - Patent 5928397
A method to produce fused quartz particulates from quartz sand is disclosed employing continuous withdrawal of the molten material from a furnace apparatus.
Melting of quartz sand in such manner permits numerous bubbles and other physical discontinuities, such as striae, ridges, grain structures and the like to form in the fused quartz ribbon 22 being continuously removed from the furnace apparatus 12 thereby enhancing its subsequent thermal fracture according to the present method.
Said heated fused quartz ribbon 22 is next continuously immersed in a container of cooling water 30 causing immediate thermal-shock sufficient to shatter said member into a plurality of relatively small pieces 32.

A fused quartz tube 10 of outside diameter 25 mm and inside diameter 19 mm was mounted between the chucks 11, 12 of a glass-working lathe.
Mobile metallic impurity ions were thus caused to diffuse through the fused quartz to the outer surface wall of the tube, where the hot gases stimulated vaporization of the impurity ions, at the zone of impingement of the flame with the external surface of the tube.
A hollow cylindrical ingot 20 of fused quartz having a wall thickness of 45 mm was lowered through a high temperature graphite furnace 21, as conventionally used for redrawing an annular ingot to tubing, operating at a temperature of 2100.degree.

In general, the electrical insulating properties of clear fused quartz are superior to those of the opaque or translucent types.
In general, the devitrification rate of fused quartz is slow for two reasons: the nucleation of the cristobalite phase is possible only at the free surface, and the growth rate of the crystalline phase is low.
In one study using GE 214LD fused quartz tubing, it was found that the sag rate decreases as the wall thickness of the tube is increased.

Fused Quartz Encyclopedia Information @ ArtQuilt.com (Art Quilt)   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Fused quartz and fused silica are types of glass containing primarily silica in amorphous (non-crystalline) form.
Fused silica is produced using high purity silica sand as the feedstock, and is normally melted using an electric furnace, resulting in a material that is translucent or opaque.
Synthetic fused silica is made from a silicon-rich chemical precursor usually using a continuous flame hydrolysis process which involves chemical gasification of silicon, oxidation of this gas to silicon dioxide, and thermal fusion of the resulting dust (although there are alternative processes).

Names like quartz, silica, fused silica, fused quartz, synthetic quartz, synthetic fused silica or synthetic fused quartz have been used in various publications, sometimes to describe the same product.
Typically produced from the melting (fusing) of crystalline quartz and refined such that an amorphous (glass) is formed.
Synthetic Fused Silica is amorphous silicon dioxide that has been produced through chemical deposition rather than refinement of natural ore. This synthetic material is of much higher purity and quality as compared to fused quartz made from natural minerals.

Re: the difference between crystal and fused quartz
SiO2, in all its forms (quartz and clear fused silica being two of several) is made up of little tetrahedra consisting of a silicon atom surrounded by 4 oxygen atoms in a tetrahedral arrangement.
In pure SiO2, each oxygen is shared between two tetrahedra...that is, the tetrahedra are essentially joined together at their tips (it is possible to come up with arrangements where the tetrahedra share two oxygens or three oxygens, but only if other atoms are present).
Quartz has a moderately complicated but regular and repeating pattern of tetrahedra.
