Fused quartz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fused silica is produced using high purity silica sand as the feedstock, and is normally melted using an electric furnace, resulting in a material that is translucent or opaque.
Synthetic fused silica is made from a silica-rich chemical precursor usually using a continuous flame hydrolysis process which involves chemical gassification of silicon, oxidation of this gas to silicon dioxide, and thermal fusion of the resulting dust (although there are alternative processes).
Fumed silica is manufactured by a similar flame hydrolysis process to synthetic fused silica, however is in the form of a fine powder/dust and is typically used in applications such as fillers for rubbers and plastics, coatings, adhesives, cements, sealants, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, inks and abrasives.

 Silica — Silicon Dioxide (SiO2)
Fused is primarily used in the electronics industry (around 70% of the total market) where its good dielectric and insulating properties are exploited; though it may also be used as a refractory material or in investment casting.
Fused silica is used in the refractory casting slurry, where it coats a wax replica of the component to be cast.
Silica is commonly used as a filler in paints, plastics, rubber, adhesives, putty and sealants.

Synthetic fused silica (amorphous silicon dioxide) is formed by chemical combination of silicon and oxygen.
It is not to be confused with fused quartz, which is made by crushing and melting natural crystals, or by fusing silica sand, which results in a granular microstructure and bubble entrapment.
Infrared batch-to-batch transmittance variations in synthetic fused silica are attributable to fluctuations in the OH chemical bond content.

Silica is a term used by geologists for SiO2 or silicon dioxide in any form whether it is in the form of quartz, or any of the Quartz Group members, or as a segment of the chemistry of a silicate, or even as silicon dioxide dissolved in water.
Silica sand is used in constructions in the form of portland cement, concrete, and mortar, as well as sandstone. It is used also in grinding and polishing glass and stone,in the manufacture of glass, ceramics, silicon carbide, etc. and as a refractory material.
Silica is not known to have any inherent toxic effects, but there has been a concern about the role it plays in the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Polymicro Technologies > Catalog > Quartz and Synthetic Fused Silica
Names like quartz, silica, fused silica, fused quartz, synthetic quartz, synthetic fused silica or synthetic fused quartz have been used in various publications, sometimes to describe the same product.
Typically produced from the melting (fusing) of crystalline quartz and refined such that an amorphous (glass) is formed.
Synthetic Fused Silica is amorphous silicon dioxide that has been produced through chemical deposition rather than refinement of natural ore. This synthetic material is of much higher purity and quality as compared to fused quartz made from natural minerals.

Fabrication of Microarrays on Fused Silica Plates Using the Laser-Induced Backside Wet Etching Method
A novel approach in the fabrication of microarrays of dye and protein on fused silica plates using the laser-induced backside wet etching (LIBWE) technique is described.
The surface of fused silica plates was initially precoated using trimethoxysilane self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and then etched using the LIBWE method to obtain the desired microstructures on the plate surface.
In the case of fused silica plates precoated with fluorinated SAMs, the LIBWE method is used to remove the SAMs to expose the etched silica surfaces, on which a thin layer of pyranine molecules can be site-selectively deposited using an aqueous solution of pyranine.
