Mineral Identification Key Fusibility & Specific Gravity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Fusibility is a measure of how much heat it takes to melt a mineral into a globule, or at least to melt the sharp edge of a sharp splinter and make it round over.
Quite a few minerals are easily fusible in the flame of a candle or typical cigarette lighter: A small, sharp, splinter held in the flame either melts into a globule or its edges round over easily.
Such minerals are said to have a fusibility of "1" or "2" – though for our purposes the degree of difficulty with which a mineral fuses is not particularly important.

KNOW THE METALS 2 - Buy Gold and Silver Jewelry Online Information   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Fusibility is the capability that permits one metal to be combined with another metal, both in the sense of being mixed together in a molten form and in the sense of two metals being bonded (fused or welded together.
Malleability, ductility, tensile strength, and fusibility are desirable characteristics, since metals with these characteristics can be easily worked and will hold and retain their shapes after working and wearing.
Metals that are brittle and elastic, with little fusibility, are undesirable for jewelry because they will break or lose their shapes and they cannot be used in combination with other metals.

STUDY OF THE FUSIBILITY OF SOME RAW GLAZE COMPOSITIONS David Tetteh Institute Of Industrial Research
Fusibility is one of the most important factors in the production of glazes on account of its influence on the surface of glazed ceramic wares.
Fusibility may be defined as ability of a substance to change from the solid to a liquid phase, usually through the agency of heat (though pressure may also be an influencing factor).
This could be attributed to the combination of the materials used, which tend to have varied influence on the glass structure due to the varied effectiveness of their network-modifying oxides.

Int. J. Dev. Biol. - Allorecognition in compound ascidians.
The genetic basis for this colony specificity resides in a single highly polymorphic gene locus (fusibility locus) with codominantly expressed alleles.
Based on these findings, the fusibility locus of botryllids seems to be very similar to the MHC of vertebrates.
Considering that vertebrates evolved directly from ascidians, it is likely that the fusibility locus is an ancestral form of the vertebrate MHC.

 Inertinite
Since the reflectance values of fusibility and infusibility thresholds vary with the coal rank, application of the reflectance method is restricted to single-seam coals.
While Australian and overseas coals do not appear to differ significantly in their inertinite fusibility, an important finding of the study is the existence of a regular pattern in inertinite composition of high and low inertinite coals.
Since low reflecting semifusinite provides much of the fusible and partly fusible inertinite, inertinite-rich coals contain relatively more of the "reactive" inertinite than the low-inertinite coals on which the 1/3 fusibility cutoff in the Schapiro-Gray method is based.

This irreproducibility led to the testing of a range of methods for determining the fusibility temperatures of coal ashes.
The use of shrinkage levels for an ash sample measured using thermo-mechanical analysis (TMA) is shown to be a valid method of characterising ash fusibility behaviour.
These new temperatures are shown to correlate with the observed extent of melting and calculated viscosity, which is an indication of particle stickiness in a furnace.

 Coal Ash Fusiblity Furnace CAF
Coal ash fusibility testing is therefore required by users to determine the ash fusibility characteristics of the fuel.
The published standards require that the ash fusion temperature furnace is measured and recorded at 4 points: the initial rounding of the cone tip, when the cone has softened, when melted to a hemisphere and finally when it flows into a puddle.
The Coal Ash Fusibility furnace is designed to heat coal ash samples up to a maximum of 1600°C in a controlled atmosphere and visually record the fusion of the samples for analysis.

Physical Characteristics of Precious Stones: Weight and Molecular Action
The characterisitcs by which precious stones and gems are descibed, such as specific gravity, hardness, and fusibility of a gem.
Specific gravity.--Every one knows that two equal volumes of different substances have seldom the same weight: a piece of lead, for instance, is much heavier than a piece of wood exactly equal to it in size.
The simple silicates, ternary bodies, are fusible at a much lower temperature; and the multiple silicates offer no serious resistance.

 Geochemical Testing Explanation
Fusibility: Fusibility is a measure of a minerals melting temperature.
The test is performed by using a pair of forceps to hold a very thin splinter, or sharp edge of a larger grain, in a position just beyond the tip of the oxidizing flame (Figure F7) of a propane torch.
Melts quickly into globule, or edges of grain quickly become rounded by heating a low to medium size flame.

The Fusibility of Blended Coal Ash   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
The fusibility of blended coal ash was studied by comparing the standard ash fusibility temperature test, temperatures at particular penetration levels measured by thermomechanical analysis (TMA), and predictions of liquid proportion with temperature thermodynamic equilibrium.
Ash fusibility temperatures (AFT) of coal ash are found at temperatures below the predicted liquidus temperature and, for ashes from blended coals, are generally nonlinear with respect to the blend proportion.
The conclusion that trends in AFTs with blend proportions are mirrored by changes in the liquidus temperature from ternary systems, as was found by previous investigators, is not supported.
