Review | Hard, Hard City by Jim Fusilli
Fusilli didn't invent "Manhattan Noir," but he has certainly appropriated it for his own uses and, in the process, raised that subgenre to art.
As usual, Fusilli's protagonist in his fourth novel, Hard, Hard City, is the cynically inclined Terry Orr, a man so bedeviled by his past that he's compelled to dwell there in his dreams.
Hardly appropriate when all he's trying to do is find their absent offspring, but an indication of how Fusilli has been influenced by Ross Macdonald and Robert B. Parker, both of whose novels often feature children seriously neglected by wealthy but narcissistic parents.

Barilla - The choice of Italy
Moreover, thanks to Barilla's long experience in the research and choice of the best durum-wheats, it made it become an unmatchable pasta, always al dente (this means that the best way to know when the pasta is cooked correctly, it must offer little resistance "to the bite") according to the authentic Italian tradition.
Fusilli Barilla distinguish for their shape that twists as a spiral in subtle curves twirling pleasantly after one another.
Fusilli are perfect with rich sauces made with meat or ricotta cheese (a fresh sweet cheese similar to cottage cheese), revealing their ductile and extroverted personality also in fresh pasta salads.

Bookreporter.com - CLOSING TIME by Jim Fusilli
Jim Fusilli, a music critic for The Wall Street Journal, compares the known city with its rough underside and contrasts these two symbiotic levels of civilization in his first novel, CLOSING TIME.
Fusilli does this through the eyes of Terry Orr, an author who no longer writes, except for an occasional missive to his deceased wife Marina.
Fusilli nicely balances this dichotomy, and that is a good thing.

Amazon.com: Hard Hard City: Books: Jim Fusilli   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
Fusilli is a serious novelist who excels in creating a noirish view of Manhattan and strong characters whose relationships continue to evolve with each book.
Fusilli's fourth Terry Orr novel finds the troubled PI pursuing a missing person's case brought to him by Daniel Wu, a friend of his teenage daughter, Bella.
Fusilli's exploration of Orr's complex psyche is only one of many reasons to recommend this novel, others being the book's carefully etched supporting cast and the author's loving evocation of post 9/11 New York City.

Fusilli's sense of place and pacing falter a bit in New Orleans--including a section near the end, which sags noticeably--but most of the story is set in the Big Apple, and is pitch-perfect.
Putnam is obviously grooming Fusilli to take his place in its stable of mystery bestsellers, and the follow-up to this sometimes rough but necessary narrative link in the series may well do it.
Now, Fusilli's work is noteworthy for the sense of place he gives to New York City -- a place I have never lived -- but I have to say he also does pretty well by New Orleans and Thibodaux -- a part of the world I know very well.

Book review: Hard, Hard City by Jim Fusilli
Jim Fusilli’s strength is by far his use of characterization.
Fusilli provides this not only in the first person thoughts of Terry but in well written dialogue.
Jim Fusilli does provide some background about Terry Orr and his life in the Prologue, but this section is also a bit confusing and written in a slightly different and even more introspective format than the rest of the book.
