Fusor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Nevertheless, the fusor has since become a practical neutron source and is produced commercially for this role.
In the Hirsch version of the fusor, the ions are produced by ionizing a dilute gas in the chamber.
In the fusor, the ions are accelerated to several keV by the electrodes, so heating as such is not necessary (as long as the ions fuse before losing their energy by any process).

Fusor (astronomy) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A fusor is a term proposed to the IAU by Gibor Basri, Professor of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley, to help clarify the nomenclature of celestial bodies.
This definition included any form of nuclear fusion so the lowest possible mass of a fusor was set at roughly 13 times that of Jupiter, at which point deuterium fusion becomes possible.
This is significantly smaller than the point at which sustained fusion of hydrogen becomes possible, around 60 times the mass of Jupiter.

The Fusor Reactor - Dr. Philo Farnsworth - Lost Science
The "Fusor" is a device, which produces controllable hot fusion reactions and does not utilize magnetic confinement.
A Fusor having a diameter of just one meter would permit greater ignition power for a smaller time period, while multiplying its output power volumetrically.
Since the Fusor was "a miserable failure" it would be he (not they) who be taking the loss by buying back what was considered worthless on the academic market.

Magnetic sail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This would provide much higher acceleration than a solar sail driven by a laser, but a charged particle beam would disperse in a shorter distance than a laser.
The magnetic sail features prominently in the science-fiction novels of Michael Flynn, particularly in The Wreck of the River of Stars; this book is the tale of the last flight of a magnetic sail ship when fusion rockets based on the Farnsworth-Hirsch Fusor have become the preferred technology.
Mini-magnetospheric plasma propulsion (M2P2) — uses a cloud of plasma to form its magnetic sail instead of a loop of cable.

Court changes have reduced the backlog since then and the event is now more of a celebration, he says.

His results are most gratifying in that they mime those of my own with Fusor III and Scott Little's device in Austin Texas.
This rather dramatically points to the fact that we are all working correctly, as it is unlikely that three people could arrive at similar performance specs through caprice, but more likely, through good technique and measurement.
It also points out that the fusor will behave similarly when operated by three different hands and constructed in three different ways.

Farnsworth's original fusors were rather complex, but the concept is very simple, and can be adapted to your heart's desire.
Fusors are currently sold to qualified users as commercial neutron sources, and used for research in university labs.
A non-fusion "demo" fusor tends to be cheaper and easier to build, as the materials requirements are not nearly as strict, and lower voltages can be used.

Brian McDermott's Fusion Story-How I made the Farnsworth Fusor
It was necessary to have several ports placed around the fusor to allow for the input of electricity, Deuterium, a viewing port and a port for the vacuum pump.
This design allows most of the ions to be generated at the outer rim of the fusor, ensuring that they are at fusion energy upon arriving at the inner grid.
In the simple, two grid fusor, ions could be created anywhere in the fusor volume, including inside of the inner grid; this prevents them from being accelerated to fusion energies.

Philo Farnsworth: Fusor (Inertial Electrostatic Confinement)
When it was first introduced to the fusion research world in the late 1960s it was the first device that could clearly demonstrate it was producing any fusion reactions at all, and hopes were high that it could be quickly developed into a practical power source.
The Farnsworth-Hirsch Fusor is a specific implementation of an IEC device which is popular, since costs for building a simple one can run between $500 to $4000 (in 2003 U.S. dollars).
While machines based on Farnsworth's Fusor are indeed easy to build, and worked better than any thermonuclear fusion machines until quite recently, it was immediately apparent to the researchers that they could never reach breakeven.

To Start, a fusor is a device, as one might guess, that creats fusion, with Deuterium gas.
Initialy a fusor is a vaccume chamber with two spherical open and charged grids.
The deterium is injected past the first grid, where it becomes ionized, this ionized set of particals is then attracted to the second (inner) grid, which holds the opposite charge of the outside grid.

Experiments with Farnsworth's "Fusor" in the early-to-mid 1960s were impressive but inconclusive: despite tremendous "neutron counts" (the evidence of fusion), the Fusor was never achieve "break-even" the point at which there is more energy coming out of the device than goes in to start and sustain the reaction.
Nevertheless, in the past few years there has been a resurgence of interest in the Farnsworth approach to fusion.
There is now a small cadre of "fusioneers" building "Fusors" in their basements and garages.
