Numa Denis Fustel de Coulanges - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Numa Denis Fustel de Coulanges (March 18, 1830 - September 12, 1889) was a French historian.
Fustel de Coulanges was the most conscientious of men, the most systematic and uncompromising of historians.
Appointed to a lectureship at the École Normale Supérieure in February 1870, to a professorship at the Paris faculty of letters in 1875, and to the chair of medieval history created for him at the Sorbonne in 1878, he applied himself to the study of the political institutions of ancient France.

BookRags: Fustel De Coulanges, N. D. Summary
Fustel's reputation as a founding father of the sociology of religion is based largely on his assertion that religious ideas could have a decisive effect in the formulation of a society's social and economic structure.
Fustel became somewhat torn between his dislike of priestly hierarchy and his desire to see the church as the vehicle by which Roman social organization was preserved and transmitted to medieval France.
Fustel's complex attitude toward the priesthood and his interest in the relation between church and state form part of a chapter of nineteenth-century intellectual history that has yet to be written.
