Along with this success, however, came fierce media scrutiny that unwelcomingly documented a public rift between his two sons and the divorce from his wife and kamisan of the Futgoyama-beya in 2001.
Futagoyama's health began to deteriorate after the Aki 2003 basho and led to his being kyujo from each subsequent basho.
Despite the rapid decline of his health, in January of this year, Futagoyama-oyakata displayed considerable mental toughness as he rose from his hospital bed to make an appearance at the danpatsushiki of his apprentice Takanonami where he snipped at the former Ozeki's oi-cho to a considerable buzz from the crowd.

Futagoyama gave away his very dear Fujishima-kabu to Dewanoumi ichimon in exchange for the Sendagawa-kabu (that had already been promised to Musoyama).
It was a no-brainer that Futagoyama had given all three certificates to a trustworthy person before going to hospital.
Another yellow press answer to the whereabouts of the kabu was that late Futagoyama had left all assets to a woman who was caring about him in his last months.

The Futagoyama stable is one of the most competitive in sumo, having produced two yokozunas (grand champions), Wakanohana and Takanohana.
Indeed, the Futagoyama stablemaster, Fujishima, and his wife, manager Noriko Fujita, are the two former yokozunas' parents, although when Takanohana graduated from junior high school, the family virtually ended the parent-child relationship to train their children as sumo wrestlers along with others.

Known as Futagoyama Oyakata, but even better known as Takanohana I, he is the legendary Ozeki who gave back to sumo its true nobility and popularity in the 1970's, moving an entire country to passionately support his deeds on the dohyo.
Equipped with a weak physique, his sumo did not depend in any way on trickery; on the contrary, he had the sumo of a big man, bringing down his opponents with strength and power.
Futagoyama oyakata's aura, the strictness of his teaching, and his intelligence have made him one of most brilliant oyakata in the history of sumo, producing 30 Yusho, 20 outstanding performance prizes, 23 fighting spirit prizes, 14 technique prizes and 30 kinboshi!

When their uncle, Katsuji Hanada, 77, the founder of the Futagoyama Stable, was unable to bear the argument any longer, he stepped in, but their emotions did not die down and it was reportedly difficult to bring the situation under control.
