Stock analysts, for example, try to determine the relationship between the future value of a series of cash flows (the company's future earnings) and the amount that the company's stock is currently selling for.
Moreover, if we had calculated the future value using a less conservative rate of return, that of the domestic stock market, the difference would have been much greater.

This model states that the intrinsic value of the stock is the present value of all future dividends, with the eventual liquidation of the company considered as one big dividend at the end.
Actually, the intrinsic stock valuation is given by the present value of all the future earnings, just as if the earnings had been paid out as dividends.
We must, in the end, conclude that the definition of the fundamental valuation of a stock is to a large extent arbitrary.

Since the payoff from investing in a growth stock is some years in the future, it is necessary to discount the future value of the stock to find out what it is worth today.
If you think that the expected discount rate on the stock should be.10 per year, then the 159 million shares outstanding (assuming that no options are exercised) have a value today of about $37.
This means that the "upside" of the stock could be spread among at least 210 million shares, not 159.

More to the point, in the case of the Internet, sector investing rests upon a basic misconception, namely that there are things we can meaningfully call "Internet stocks." In fact, there are at least five different types of Internet companies, each of which has very different future prospects.
In part, that move into Internet stocks is simply evidence of what happens when everyone believes so strongly in the stock market that keeping any money in cash is regarded as heresy.
