Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The UK Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) will provide aerial refueling (AR) and Air Transport (AT) for the Royal Air Force using a version of the Airbus A330 MRTT.
The FSTA will be a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) where the RAF will pay for aerial refueling and air transport missions as required.
With continuing doubts over the FSTA programme Marshall Aerospace, responsible for the conversion of the RAF's original Tristars, have offered to buy and convert some of the large number of surplus commercial Tristars.

 Tankers - Military Aircraft
Tankers are flying more worldwide, low-volume channel and scheduled cargo missions allowing strategic airlifters to be dedicated to the tasks only they can accomplish.
The idea of refueling aircraft in flight was born nearly 80 years ago, and, within a few decades aviation refueling moved from the age of dare devils and barnstormers to the routine refueling of all types of aircraft, in all conditions, all over the world.
Fighter aircraft flew into position behind the tanker so that its probe could be inserted in the drogue at the end of the tanker's hose.

The consortium is responsible for certifying and maintaining the aircraft and also for the provision of crew training for the RAF and the provision of sponsored reservist aircrews to supplement RAF crew when required.
The baseline commercial aircraft uses a configuration of very high capacity fuel tanks in the wings so modifications to the fuel tanks for the tanker transporter role are not required.
The passenger cabin and the cargo compartment are not altered.

Airbus A310 MRTT - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
While operated for some time as a pure transport aircraft the Airbus A310 is now being offered as the Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) through the addition of an aerial refueling capability.
They are now able to offer tankers from the small A310 with refueling pods to the large A330 MRTT equipped with refueling booms.
As a tanker, it has very similar capacity to KC-135R, but, because of the larger cabin, it is much more flexible, offering good capacity for cargo, troop transport, VIP transport, or other use, lacking only the capacity to land on rough strips to qualify as a strategic transport.

Tanker aircraft are just airliners that are fitted with vast fuel tanks instead of passenger seats.
In the jargon of the strategic planner, air-to-air refuelling is a force multiplier.
With the decision on FSTA not due until 2002, there might just be the time to turn this into the first real EU defence improved capability project - and it would be one that freed up money for other key needs.

Aerospace Engineering Online: Technology Update (March 2002)
In Europe, several major aerospace and defense companies are involved in the design of a new strategic tanker aircraft for the UK Royal Air Force (RAF), based on the widebody Airbus A330.
In its tanker role, the aircraft would have a total fuel capacity of 139,090 L. Hose and drogue pods installed under each wing would have a flow rate of 1500 L/min, and a hose/drum unit (HDU) in the lower center fuselage would provide up to 2270 L/min.
The aircraft could also be used in a passenger role with cargo carried in the forward part of the upper deck and passengers aft.

The configuration of a commercial 767 for the tanker transport role involves the installation of additional pumps and auxiliary fuel tanks together with the fuel distribution lines below the floor of the main cabin, leaving the main cabin free for cargo, passenger or both cargo and passenger transportation.
Future aircraft such as the Joint Strike Fighter will be developed for the optional installation of either refuelling system according to the customer country's operational requirements.

However, perhaps he did not read too carefully the statement I made this morning about the future strategic tanker aircraft, in which I indicated that it was a PFI project.
Often, shipbuilding is associated with Scotland and the north-east, and aircraft manufacturing with north Wales and the north-west, but in reality the benefits of such major contracts spread throughout the UK's manufacturing base.

The Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft (FSTA) is planned to replace the air-to-air refuelling (AAR) and some elements of air transport (AT) capability currently provided by the RAF’s fleet of VC10 and TriStar aircraft.
As of April 2006 the project is in its assessment phase and as such, it does not have a formally approved development programme or a firm date for introduction to service.
It is believed that Air Tanker are proposing the A330-200 aircraft as the FSTA platform.

US Debating Aerial Tanker Types, Mix (defense acquisition, defence purchasing, military procurement)
Acquiring used aircraft as tankers is not as cost-effective as acquiring new aircraft, introduces potential issues of electronic survivability in a nuclear environment, and would only meet between 10-25% of the total requirement based on market availability.
A fleet in which all the aircraft have cargo- and passenger-carrying capability has a present value of life-cycle cost about 6 percent greater than that of a fleet in which none of the aircraft have cargo- or passenger-carrying capability; as well as additional military utility and flexibility.
Future circumstances that are likely to offer a better alternative, or lower requirements for an aerial tanker fleet (unlikely), technical and doctrinal developments that allow new design alternatives (for instance, a cost-effective seaplane option that could itself be refueled in the water by Navy ships instead of returning to base), etc.

Consequently, whichever of the two consortia (Air Tanker, with its new A330-200s, or Tanker and Transport Service Company, with its second hand Boeing B-767s) takes the Future Strategic Tanker Aircraft contract will have to invest both in platforms, spares and crewing.

Pan Am thought that the fuselage of the prototype was too narrow, and Boeing consequently widened the aircraft for the passenger variant, and that was given the model number 707.
There is something to be said for using second hand aircraft to do the job, too, as aircraft are designed for a certain number of flight cycles, and military tankers don't generally have the same punishing multiple flights per day schedule that airline operations do.
Therefore aircraft that have only a few years life left in them in civil aviation can have a substantially longer life (in terms of years) in the military.
