Pacing a story is a rigorous process if you've never done it before, and takes a great deal of what I call "creative sacrifices"--that is to say, having the wherewithal to cut anything that isn't working out, no matter how much you think it's a great idea.
Not only did plenty of thought go into our "Jump-In" episodes, but this story is also the kick-off to Fear City's "Year of Climaxes," which isn't the sort of thing one decides to do without nailing down some particulars first.
This also doesn't address the fact that the coloring process can sometimes subvert the original intent of the artist -- although comics are a collaborative enterprise, often the freelancers involved have no direct contact with each other, leading to possible friction over differences of creative opinion.
