The Economic Purpose of Futures Markets   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Many people think that futures markets are just about speculating or “gambling.” While it is true that futures markets can be used for speculating, that is not the primary reason for their existence.
Futures contracts are very similar to forward contracts, but futures contracts typically have certain features that make them more useful for hedging and less useful for merchandising than forward contracts.

 Futures 101
Notwithstanding the rapid growth and diversification of futures markets, their primary purpose remains the same as it has been for nearly a century and a half, to provide an efficient and effective mechanism for the management of price risks.
Hedgers are individuals and firms that make purchases and sales in the futures market solely for the purpose of establishing a known price level--weeks or months in advance--for something they later intend to buy or sell in the cash market (such as at a grain elevator or in the bond market).
Futures prices increase and decrease largely because of the myriad factors that influence buyers' and sellers' judgments about what a particular commodity will be worth at a given time in the future (anywhere from less than a month to more than two years).

 Futures
The futures markets are characterized by the ability to use very high leverage relative to stock markets.
Futures can be used either to hedge or to speculate on the price movement of the underlying asset.
The primary difference between options and futures is that options give the holder the right to buy or sell the underlying asset at expiration, while the holder of a futures contract is obligated to fulfill the terms of his/her contract.
