MSF Integral Futures Studies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Because Futures Studies is, by its very nature, a broadly inter-, trans-, multi- and meta-disciplinary activity, it is well suited to the conscious use of more inclusive and integral frameworks, such as the one proposed by Wilber.
With a philosophy consisting, in part, of methodological pluralism and a post-metaphysical stance regarding the ontological status of 'the future', Integral Futures Studies welcomes, embraces and values all careful and sincere approaches to knowledge-seeking, in all spheres of human activity to which they are both appropriate and adequate—including analytical rationality, intuitive insight, and spiritual inspiration.
Integral Futures Studies takes this simple but profound recognition as central to its program for understanding how the past was laid down; how the present has come to be; and what futures may yet come to pass.

 Futures Studies As Applied Knowledge
Thus, one of the things futures studies tries to do is to help people examine and clarify their images of the future--their ideas, fears, hopes, beliefs, concerns about the future--so that they might improve the quality of their decisions which impact it.
Another thing futures studies tries to do is to help people move their images and actions beyond an attempt passively to forecast the future and then to develop plans of action on the basis of the forecasts.
Futures studies has never been a strictly educational or theoretical enterprise to me. It has always been driven by the need to be useful to both ordinary people and to elite decision-makers without giving in to their desire to have The Wondrous Things To Come Foretold by Ye Ole Mystic Soothsayer.

Futures studies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Futures studies takes as one of its important attributes (epistemological starting points) the on-going effort to analyze images of the future and distinguish possible, probable and preferred (normative) futures.
For this task, futures studies, as it is generally undertaken, uses a wide range of theoretical models and practical methods, many of which come from other academic disciplines (including economics, sociology, geography, history, engineering, mathematics, psychology, technology, physics, biology, astronomy, and theology).
Futures studies, although typically informed by science, does not strictly utilize the scientific method in the sense of repeatable experiments creating consensus assertions, lacking the ability to control or repeat the time variable.

Methods for Studying the Future   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Generally, methods for studying the future do not pretend to be able to predict the future, although assessing the probabilities of alternative futures is an important aspect of futures studies methods.
Futures methods help people to deal with this uncertainty by clarifying what is known, what can be known, what the likely range of possibilities is, what the most desirable possibilities are, and how today's decisions may play out in each of a variety of possible futures.
Futures studies can also be thought of as encompassing five stages, although many individual projects will focus on one or two stages and leave the rest to other projects.

Richard Slaughter observes that "All science, all futures work is committed," (Slaughter, 1988: 17), yet by focusing on different layers, Niinuluoto and Ravetz show that the nature of this commitment and to who it is given remains varied.
Niiniluoto's focus on "futures studies as a branching tree with alternative possibilities" and "graphical, statistical, and quantitative methods" (Niiniluoto, 2001: 373) limits his discussion to the level of problem-oriented futures, in contrast to Ravetz's critical mode.
