Fuzzbox - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A fuzzbox (or fuzz box) is a type of stomp box comprising an amplifier and a clipping circuit, which generates a deliberately distorted version of the input signal.
As opposed to other distortion guitar effect pedals, a fuzzbox boosts and clips the signal sufficiently to turn a standard sine wave input in to what is effectively a square wave output.
Famous examples of fuzzboxes include the infamous Fuzz Face (originally made by the Arbiter Group), and the Big Muff Pi (made by Electro-Harmonix) series of pedals.

Like the other boxes in the series, the effects are selected and controlled from the front-panel knobs, and four footswitches provide easy storage and recall of four user patches.
Whatever your taste, there ought to be something here for you — though they haven't emulated every fuzz box ever made, the models chosen cover the available tonal range pretty well and the few oddball inclusions add to the interest.
With the DM4 costing around the same as two or three separate analogue overdrive boxes, and having the benefit of being programmable, this is a pretty cost-effective way to achieve a variety of overdrive flavours.

Distortion, in the sense that it's compared with fuzz and overdrive, is an exaggerated, edgier form of overdrive.
Fuzz boxes, which were among the earliest guitar effects, take you to the extreme edge of distortion.
Pedals that specialize in fuzz don't do a very good job of simulating the natural distortion of a tube amp; however, you can simulate a fuzz tone with a conventional distortion box by turning up the gain control and setting the tone for the brightest possible sound.

The sound is tangibly different if a fuzz unit is in front of the Octavia: an upper octave double is created, clearly demonstrated in the solo to "Purple Haze".
Jimi placed the Octavia after a fuzz and wah unit in most cases so it would react to the combined effects of both the wah and one or more fuzz boxes.
It is definitely best described as fuzz rather than distortion but has the ability to be used on chords as well as solos.

 Structuring the Fuzz
But each box is more—it is a set of values, emotions, and attributes that define a perceptual reality about a brand.
In your first box (Box #1), you could define your problem as, "How might I find my keys?" or "How might I replace my lost keys?" The focus of this box is on the keys—just as the focus in line extensions is on extending a brand instead of creating a new one.
The secret to fuzz removal is to structure the process and test as many assumptions as possible by asking questions.

This can be used to model simple fuzz boxes and the like, as well as modeling non-linear components in amplifiers.
However, good distortion effects may have parameters which are not per-sample, such as introducing compression to the signal before the clipping stage, or things of that nature.
Anyway, a typical fuzz box works something like this: input -> gain -> clipper -> EQ -> out The "clipper" is typically a transistor whose input stage is being overdriven by the gain -- the more gain, the sooner the signal hits the clipping point.

By the late '60s, most guitar amplifiers came with reverb and either tremolo or vibrato, and fuzz boxes, wah-wahs, and tape echoes were de rigueur for guitarists.
Bear in mind that for every great fuzz box or wah-wah pedal created, there were dozens of mediocre imitations.

Though guitar effects pedals were a relatively new phenomenon when Jimi first hit the international scene, he quickly made them a part of his setup.

The first units developed were FUZZ BOXES, which would take an incoming signal and modulate its amplitude by a square wave to produce audio clipping; the amount of modulation was controlled by the user.
Additionally, some fuzz boxes would incorporate low pass filter designs to further shape the tone.
Now, clipping produced by a fuzz box contains a wealth of overtones, many of which are odd harmonics (hence the addition of a tone control to eliminate some of the nasty upper harmonics produced by the unit).
