The Fw 187's initial role was to be a fast interceptor, however, requirements from the powers that be dictated that the Falcon be a destroyer.
This destroyer requirement doomed the Fw 187 and the RLM stuck with the Bf 110.
In 1943 the Fw 187 was considered for the night fighter role, but it's narrow fuselage did not allow the fitting of the necessary radar and equipment.

Focke-Wulf Fw 187 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unlike the Bf 110, the Fw 187 was originally conceived as a single-seater, but a second seat for a radio operator/rear gunner had to be added on request by the Reichsluftfahrtministerium (RLM).
Despite an RLM requirement that the Fw 187 use Junkers Jumo 210 engines instead of the planned BMW 600, the performance of the Fw 187 was generally superior to that of the Bf 110.
With the Fw 187 they could have had a successful long-range fighter in the Battle of Britain, which would have made an impact on the relative losses of the clashing air forces.

With the Fw 187 they could have had a successful long-range fighter in the (The prolonged bombardment of British cities by the German Luftwaffe during World War II and the aerial combat that accompanied it) Battle of Britain, which would have made an impact on the relative losses of the clashing air forces.
Later, up-engined variants of the Fw 187 were developed.
The Fw 187 was also considered for the night-fighter role, but its extremely narrow fuselage prohibited the installation of radar and other necessary equipment.

 Focke-Wulf Fw 187 Falke "Falcon"
The second prototype Fw 187 V2 was flying by summer of 1937 and it was destined to be the last single seat version.
The third prototype Fw 187 was radically altered, but to save weight and dimensional changes the extra position was as a radio operator with no defensive guns.
The next prototype Fw 187 V6 (CI-NY) was able to utilize two 1000 hp Daimler-Benz DB 600A liquid cooled engines and was outfitted with surface evaporation cooling to reduce the drag of coolant radiators.

The Fw 187 had an extremely narrow fuselage and its cockpit was so small, that the engine instruments had to be mounted on the inboard sides of the engine covering.
The Fw 187 had a full retractable landing gear, which was in flight fully covered for better aerodynamics (the V-2 had a crash landing because the right main landing gear broke, so this was in the early design stage aproblem as later for the ta154, too.).
Next, three Fw 187A-0 (based upon the third prototype) pre-serial planes were built and used since summer 1940 as a defense for the Focke-Wulf facilities at Bremen, later in the Winter inofficially at the 13.

Focke-Wulf Fw 187 Falke was the Focke-Wulf's entry to the 1938 (or when it was) Zerstörer (heavy twin-engined fighter) competition.
It was in many aspects a better plane than Bf 110 which won the competition, but only about 7 prototypes and 3 pre-production planes were built (the latter carrying prominent numbers 1, 4 and 7 on the fuselages).
IMHO, the Fw 187 was a much better-looking airplane than the Bf 110, but probably the reason for turndown was that it used the DB 601 engines that were needed for the Bf 109.

Remarks by Chris Pinn: "The Focke-Wulf 187 was originally designed as a single seat fighter along similar lines as aircraft such as the Westland Whirlwind.
It was then modified to compete with the Messerschmitt Bf 110 by changing it to a two seat 'Zerstörer' configuration.
As the Bf 110 had better performance as well as a rearward firing gun, production of the FW 187 was stopped after only three production aircraft had been built.

Although it was developed long before, the Allies never met the Fw 190 in the air until early 1941, where it was quite a surprise to Allied aviators.
It wasnt until June of 1942 that a Fw 190 A crash landed in Britain, and after tests were conducted it was found that the 190 was actually better than they had expected.

The twin-engined Focke-Wulf Fw 187 was a contemporary of the Messerschmitt Bf 110, however production was limited to a handful of prototypes.
Developed by Professor Kurt Tank, the Fw 187 first flew in the summer of 1937.
The few Fw 187s built served in industry defense and were later operated by the Vaerlse Aerial Gunnery School.

I'm shocked the Fw 190 got into service (although RLM had plans to cancel it after only a few were made).
The Fw 187 and the He 100 are even better examples of outstanding designs shelved for very little reason.
The Fw 187 had a few problems early on, but no more so than the Bf 110 which was pursued with vigor by RLM.

For those like me with a penchant for twin-engined prop-driven fighters, the Fw 187 remains one of history’s great “why not?” options — like the possibility of a Merlin-engined Westland Whirlwind.
An outstandingly fast and well-armed aircraft, the single-seat Fw 187 Falke (“Falcon”) was clearly superior to the Messerchmitt Bf 110 but the latter was already in service and — when forced to become a twin-seater — the Fw 187 lacked the rear defence gun demanded by the RLM.
While there have been several vacform and resin Falkes, this is the first injection-moulded kit in 1:72 scale.

Although it was never put into full production, it was a superb foundation for later twin engined German fighters.

The Fa 61 is sometimes called Fw 61, because the Focke-Achgelis company was a direct descendant of a special research department of Focke-Wulf.
For the later 8-183, Focke-Wulf initially assigned the number Fw 232, but this was changed by the RLM to Ta 183, because it conflicted with the Ar 232.
The designations Fw 249 and Fw 261 were assigned in-house by Focke-Wulf, and not by the RLM.
