Fyling Hall is a school with a uniquely vibrant personality.
In an era when boarding co-education was viewed as dangerously revolutionary, she was determined that boys and girls should learn together – and at Fyling Hall they still do, at all ages.
In a class-riven society, she believed that all children, whatever their background or circumstances, deserve the best possible education – and was known, in times of parental hardship, to accept fees paid in eggs, bales of hay and even flower bulbs.

There is a station named Fyling Hall, after Sir Hugh Cholmley’s old house, halfway to Ravenscar.
It was about the year 1625 that Sir Hugh to a great extent rebuilt Fyling Hall, which is still standing; but he came in with his family before the plaster on the walls was thoroughly dry, and the household seems to have suffered in health on this account.
Shortly afterwards Sir Hugh lost his eldest son Richard, who was only five years old, and this great trouble decided him to move to Whitby; for in 1629 he sold Fyling Hall to Sir John Hotham, and took up his residence in the Abbey House at Whitby.

A VERY inexperienced Graham School under-15 girls cricket team battled their way to the final of a regional event at Headingley.
The Graham team lost out to Fyling Hall School, near Whitby, in a keenly-contested final of the Yorkshire inter-cricket under-15s championship at the Headingley indoor cricket school.
Most of the Graham team was made up of year sevens, who are mainly 11 and 12-year-olds, and year 10s, so for Graham to get to the final, beating local rivals Pindar in the semi-finals, was a superb achievement.
