 Guilhermina Suggia
An article by Suggia published in Country Life magazine in 1921 on the Russian singer Fyodor Chaliapin is telling.
He does with the public what he does with his songs: he manipulates them and hypnotises them and, for the time being, everybody becomes his slave; and he knows it, and we forgive him for taking advantage of us, for what we get in exchange is something wonderful and worth living for.
Chaliapin epitomized Suggia's conception of a great artist: not only musically and technically beyond reproach, but intensely dramatic and conscious of his role before the public.
