Cast from high-quality bronze in 1586 (under Fyodor Ioanovich, son of Ivan the Terrible) by the Russian master Andrew Chokhov, it never fired a shot: its walls are too thin for its 890 mm bore; so it would explode if it were to actually fire a shot.
On the barrel of the cannon, there is an image of Fyodor Ioanovich on a horse, wearing a military uniform with a sceptre in his hand; his name with all his titles is inscribed here, too; hence the name “Tsar Cannon”.
Luckily, however, Ushakov’s surviving descriptions enabled two painters, the Belousov brothers from Palekh, to repaint the murals in the 1880s.
