Hilbert was a member of staff at Königsberg from 1886 to 1895, being a Privatdozent until 1892, then as Extraordinary Professor for one year before being appointed a full professor in 1893.
Hilbert's eminent position in the world of mathematics after 1900 meant that other institutions would have liked to tempt him to leave Göttingen and, in 1902, the University of Berlin offered Hilbert Fuchs' chair.
Hilbert turned down the Berlin chair, but only after he had used the offer to bargain with Göttingen and persuade them to set up a new chair to bring his friend Minkowski to Göttingen.

Newson was a "Fellow by courtesy" at the University of Chicago from 1892-1893, after which she received a fellowship from the Association of Collegiate Alumnae, which she used to study at the University of G&.
After studying at the University of Chicago & the University of G&, Merrill attended Yale University to finish her Ph.D. After completing her Ph.D., she was appointed as a full Professor at Welles ley, and was the Chair of the Mathematics Department from 1915 or 1916 until her retirement in 1932.
According to Patricia Rothman, the University of G& views were more liberal than the University of Erlangen, which in 1898 stated that "the admission of women students was a 'measure that would overthrow all academic order'" (Rothman 71).
