Merriam-Webster - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Merriam-Webster, originally known as the G. and C. Merriam Company of Springfield, Massachusetts, is a United States company that publishes reference books, especially dictionaries that are descendants of Noah Webster's An American Dictionary of the English Language (1828).
Merriam overhauled the dictionary again with the 1961 "Webster's Third New International" under the direction of Philip B. Gove, making changes which sparked public controversy.
The Merriam-Webster company once used a unique set of phonetic symbols in their dictionaries which permitted persons from various parts of the US to learn how to pronounce new words as others who spoke in the same accent or dialect did.

Webster's Dictionary - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In response to Joseph Worcester's groundbreaking dictionary of 1860, the G.
Gove justified the change by the company's publication of Webster's Biographical Dictionary in 1943 and Webster's Geographical Dictionary in 1949, and the fact that most of the subjects removed could be found in encyclopedias.
Indeed, Merriam's progressive revisions came to have little in common with their original source, while the Universal, for example, was minimally revised and remained largely out of date.

Dord - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dord is one of the most famous errors in lexicography, a word accidentally created by the G.
and C. Merriam Company's staff and included in the second edition of its New International Dictionary, in which the term is defined as "density".
Philip Babcock Gove, an editor at Merriam-Webster who became editor-in-chief of Webster's Third New International Dictionary, explained why "dord" was included in the dictionary in a letter to the journal American Speech, fifteen years after the error was caught.

Brothers George and Charles Merriam (later joined by brother Homer) lived in Massachusetts where Professor Joseph Emerson Worcester published a dictionary (The Universal and Critical Dictionary of the English Language) that for one reason or another offended the brothers.
Repeatedly George and Charles sued to protect their copyright, but repeatedly they lost on the grounds that (a.) copyrights on dictionaries could not be renewed, and (b.) the name "Webster" could not be copyrighted.
The Merriams, then, reasoned the only way they could stay ahead of the pirates was by issuing new dictionaries that made the pirated ones out-of-date.
