Balasubramaniam was born on June 6, 1910 at Gudalur in Mayiladuthurai taluk.
GNB, as he was popularly known, was a top vocalist of repute in a period which had seen fairly a large number of top-ranking musicians.
GNB was one of the prominent composers of recent decades.

He worked as principal of Swati Tirunal College of Music, (additional info and facts about Thiruvananthapuram) Thiruvananthapuram and was a great teacher with many of his disciples attaining fame and fortune.

GNB’s approach is well described in a critique, that appeared in the magazine Sruti, of his student M L Vasanthakumari’s music: “Vasanthakumari’s raga delineation is marked by the same step-by-step development that was patented by her guru.
GNB started his alapanas, especially those prior to a ragam-tanam-pallavi (RTP), with a sketch of the raga and then followed it up with elaboration of the different parts.
GNB was also instrumental in introducing and popularizing rare and new ragas on the concert stage.

G N Balasubramanian is the son of Shri G V Narayanaswamy Iyer, who was himself a keen student of music with an almost professional thoroughness.
Her appreciation and applause were noticed by the press representatives present on the occasion and they gave a glowing report of the concert in the next day dailies and that meant G N Balasubramaniam had arrived and the road to name, fame and fortune were open to him.
Unfortunately his life was cut short and he pass away in the prime of his musicianship at the age of just 55.

GNB was described in the posters, hand-bills and song books of " Bhama Vijayam" as " Hutchins Gramophone Plate Fame Sangeetha Vidwan" as he was the first recognized Carnatic musician to act in cinema.
A major drawback which GNB had was his predominantly Brahmin accent which he could not shed in spite of his best efforts.

 A Tribute To Tyagaraja
GNB follows Tyagaraja's footsteps in defining the raga in the very first phrase of the song.
The modern treatment of Andolika is undoubtedly influenced by GNB's conception of the raga - clearly one of his favourites.
It is an attestation to the respect with which GNB was held in the musical world, that this was often sung by people like D. Jayaraman, who belonged to a different school or bani of music.

I don't know about the movie of this song, in fact I don't know much about the song itself, except that it has the majestic voice of GNB, singing the famous Bharathiyaar song.
All the songs he sung were classical/semi-classical numbers.
Sonnadhai Seidhida thaamadhamaa, also sung by GNB, was featured in SOTD earlier.

Mayavaram Krishnamurthy Tyagaraja Bhagavatar was perhaps the biggest draw among the singing stars of yesteryear, i.e., on a long term basis, excluding the sensational screen appearances of musical talents such as M. Subbulakshmi or GNB from another world.
A classically trained musician, Bhagavatar had a powerful yet pliant and mellifluous voice that traversed a great range and negotiated curves and glissandos seemingly effortlessly to the utter delight of millions of fans.
Chinnappa could act and that is where he was different from some of the other heroes, like Bhagavatar, T. Mahalingam and G. Balasubramaniam, essentially singers who strayed into films.

 One Hundred Tamils - M.S.Subbulakshmi
Kunjamma (as she was known to those close to her), brought up with all the rigorous strictness that her mother could impose upon her training in art as in life, had sung at a wedding in the household of Dakshinamurthi Pillai, the venerable percussionist from Pudukkottai.
Sakuntalai featured songs still remembered today, by MS and G.N. Balasubramaniam - "Anandamen solvene", "Premaiyil" and the sparkling "Manamohananga." Sadasivam also inspired MS to sing lyrics steeped in patriotism such as those of Subramania Bharati ("Oli padaitha kanninai") and Bankimchandra Chatterji ("Bande mataram").
Their ardour was such that they prepared to walk out of the then Corporation Radio, Madras, when refused permission to include one of these songs in the programme.

Balamurali also sang a Telugu composition in which he thanked his gurus, tracing their line right back to Thyagaraja.
