  Yule biography
George Yule senior married Henrietta Peach Pemberton who was the daughter of Captain Robert Boilean Pemberton of the Indian Army.
The Yule family had a strong reputation for scholarship, with the grandfather of the George Udny Yule of this biography, William Yule, being a renowned scholar in Persian and Arabic.
Yule returned from Germany to London in the summer of 1893 and was offered a post as a demonstrator in University College, London, by Karl Pearson.

 George Udny Yule
George Yule developed his approach to correlation via regression with a conceptually new use of least squares.
Yule worked at University College London where he was promoted to Assistant Professor of Applied Mathematics in 1896.
Yule's early work is on waves but as Pearson began to work on statistics Yule was more and more drawn into that field.

Correlation coefficients are identical to 3 decimal places except for one big discrepancy (OUTRATIO X PROPOLD, where Yule has 0.167 vs. recalculated value of 0.109).
Yule does not test for the significance of coefficients (no t-tests), and the (inverse) measure of fit he uses seems to be the standard error of estimate divided by the standard deviation of Y (PAUP).

And I could bring up an almost forgotten 1924 paper by G. Udny Yule, one of the great English statisticians, which considered the size distribution of species in a genus and conceived the first birth and death probability process, now known by his name, to generate this skewed size distribution.
Yule hypothesized that species split in two at one random rate and become extinct at another.

 Causality: Cause & Effect
In 1899, the statistician G. Udny Yule investigated the causes of pauperism in England.
Yule used a regression model to analyze his data and found that the change in pauperism was positively related to the change in the proportion treated outside of poor-houses.
A contemporary of Yule's suggested that what Yule was seeing was instead an example of confounding--those areas with more efficient administrations were better at both building poor-houses and reducing poverty.

Yule left each of these positions for various reasons, but no matter where he was working or who he was working with, Yule was always accomplishing something that was significant.
Yule concluded, however, that the correlation between the two is sheer nonsense and its meaning has no significance at all.
Without Yule's devotion and hard work, the use of probability-based statistical methods in the social sciences as well as in other disciplines would not be as advanced as it is today.

Francis Galton studied this phenomenon, and applied the slightly misleading term 'regression towards mediocrity' to it (parents of exceptional individuals also tend on average to be less exceptional than their children).
For Galton, regression had only this biological meaning, but his work (1877, 1885) was extended by Karl Pearson and Udny Yule to a more general statistical context (1897, 1903).
In the work of Pearson and Yule, the joint distribution of the dependent and independent variables is assumed to be Gaussian.

Mutationism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The resolution that led to the Modern Synthesis, which resurrected the view of Darwin using a different mechanism, came slowly.
Udny Yule argued that a trait reflecting effects of multiple Mendelian characters could show a normal distribution.
Even though most fluctuations are environmental, some of the continuous variability of natural species could have a genetic basis, and if sufficiently abundant, this could serve as the basis for a Mendelian mechanism allowing Darwinian gradualism.

Yule grew up and received his education in London since the age of four, when his family left Scotland and moved there.
Yule spent a couple years as a pupil in engineering works before he decided that he did not want to be an engineer in 1892.

It is because the class of distributions represented by the expression (1) was first derived by G. Udny Yule, that this distribution carries his name.
Since the main thrust of this paper is to examine whether the Yule distribution can describe the relative number of finance, accounting or economics articles published by an author, we portray the process in such a context.
This statistical test shows that the frequency pattern of the Yule distribution, as shown in Panel D of Table 1, is significantly different compared to the actual publishing patterns of the authors displayed in Panels A, B and C in Table 1.

Yule was already the author of a very influential textbook (An Introduction to the Theory of Statistics, Griffin, 1911), but is now remembered for his subsequent work in time series analysis.
Yule was succeeded on retirement in 1931 by John Wishart, arriving from Rothamsted.

George Udny Yule was born near Haddington, and studied civil engineering at University College London, and later also physics at Bonn University.
Yule was very influential in the fledgling discipline of statistics, and an active member of several scientific societies, but he also had an interest in medieval devotional literature, and studied Latin in later life, alongside motoring and flying.
Yule left all his books to St John's to dispose of, and there are currently over 200 items which bear his provenance.
