A sound created by Above The Law In 1992 in the album "Black Mafia Life" which was the very first "G-Funk" (gangsta funk) record.
With this album, Above The Law had created the often imitated and duplicated G-Funk name and sound, but the media decided to overlook that and pen the creation to another famous west-coast producer (Dr. Dre).

 Channel4.com - SlashMusic - Regulate G Funk Era
Dre's brother Warren G represents a new generation of jacked-up R&B. On REGULATE...G FUNK ERA, hard core street rhymes and scratch DJs vie for centre stage with sing-songy hip hop (right on the borderline of pop balladry), coloured with an airy West Coast mix of keyboards and bass.
Portraying their grim view of street life with aloof bravado, Warren G and Nate Dogg announce a new brand of stylin' with "This Is The Shack", a pleading reggae-scented groove, and "Regulate", in which a sweet R&B style of accompaniment confronts the gangstas on the dance floor.
While raunchy skits such as "Gangsta Sermon" and "'94 Ho Draft" bring the church and ESPN cheek to cheek with the boys' locker room, taut arrangements such as "Do You See" and "Recognize" depict adolescent rites of passage and day-to-day challenges of the street.

G-funk (largely derived from slowing the tempo down of funk music) incorporates multi-layered and melodic synthesizers, slow hypnotic grooves, a deep bass, background female vocals, the extensive sampling of p-funk tunes, and a high portamento sine wave keyboard lead—a feature that became the genre's notable trademark.
Dre and his half-brother Warren G are generally believed to have developed the sound; the first hints of the whiny syn-leads and Parliament Funkadelic-style bass grooves in Dre's work appeared on N.W.A. 's single "Alwayz Into Something" from their 1991 album Efil4zaggin.
Most notably, producers Warren G and DJ Quik produced their most well-known material in the G-funk vein, Dre's fellow Death Row "inmate" Daz produced Tha Dogg Pound's debut Dogg Food in the same style.

Unfortunately, one of the most hard-working, but under-appreciated artists of the g-funk era will not have the chance to enjoy the commercial success of his colleagues.
Despite appearing on nearly every album produced by Death Row, and receiving a brief moment in the spotlight with the success of Warren G's 1994 single "Regulate", Nate Dogg remains the underdogg of the hip-hop world.
The stand-out track from the entire double album is "Friends", featuring Nate's boyhood partners, Snoop Dogg and Warren G. The song is in essence a return to the values of trust, honesty and devotion that they seem to have forsaken during the Death Row years.

The genre's most notable feature is a high portamento sine wave keyboard lead.
After Dr. Dre's success, G-funk became the dominant sound in hip hop for several years, with Death Row Records artists like Snoop Doggy Dogg and Warren G (blessed with Dre's production) crossing over to the mainstream.
Also, G-funk uses similar production cues, if not the same, as San Francisco Bay Area hip hop created "Mobb Music." Mobb Music incorporates the G-funk sound, with more tempo variations, less portamento, synthesizers, Moog bass lines, and more live instruments.

 Funky T Shirts
Funk is a distinct style of music originated by African-Americans, e.g., JamesBrown and his band members (especially Maceo and Melvin Parker), and groups like TheMeters.
African-American musicians originally applied "funk" to music with a slow, mellow groove, then later with a hard-driving,insistent rhythm — because of the word's association with sexual intercourse.
This early form of the music set the patternfor later musicians: the music was slow, sexy, loose, riff -oriented and danceable.

 Regulate...G Funk Era - Warren G - Song Listings
Anchored by the laid-back G-funk anthem "Regulate," Warren G's appropriately titled Regulate...G Funk Era embodies the mid-'90s era of Cali sunshine, endless blunts, and switch-hittin' lowriders with a welcome and somewhat surprising sense of kind-heartedness.
Even if "Regulate" and "This DJ" tower far above everything else here, Regulate...G Funk Era is nonetheless a minor gem among the myriad G-funk albums of the mid-'90s, and Warren embodies the style itself here with a precision perhaps second only to his older brother and does so with a refreshing air of harmlessness.
