The scale for #1 gauge is normally 1/32, but G used a #1 track as narrow gauge.
Some think G stands for German or Grosse (German for "Great.") In its evolution, it is more "Goofy." "G" has become the standard designation of large scale trains using 2-rail #1 gauge 1 3/4 inch track.
G is equally appealing for mining, logging and other narrow gauge roads.

I purchased a Kadee "G" scale height guage to use with a "G" scale Kadee 830 coupler on the GR plan #68 1:20.3 scale reefer car.
As you noted the difference in the #1 and G scale coupler heights, both of these couplers are designed to be mounted at these heights "only".
If you slide the G scale height gauge up to a #1 scale height gauge (the #829) the two couplers will be "flush at the bottoms".

While the width of tramcar wheels is much less than railway wheels, with a smaller flange width and depth, in 'G' gauge modelling it is usual to use the commercially produced wheel sets.

Every G scale layout is different in one or more ways, but power packs are pretty much the same from one layout to the next.
In scale model railroading the preferred power source to operate the trains is Direct Current (DC).
Since AC current is being sent through the rails to restore the missing sync signal and to operate Scale Command equipped locomotives, there is no reason you should spent over $300.00 more than you have to.

All I know is that I have 1:29 G scale locos and cars, being 29 times smaller that the actual size.
Also, Large Scale is really made up of a number of modeled scales, the most common of which are 1:20.3 (correctly modeling U.S. 3' narrow gauge), 1:22.5 (correctly modeling European meter gauge), 1:24, 1:29, and 1:32 (correctly modeling U.S. standard gauge).
1/29 scale is technically OUT of true scale for 45mm track, the correct scale for standard guage on 45mm track would be 1/32 scale but only a couple manufacturers bother to make "scale" model trains, MTH, Accucraft, and some other pricey outfits.
