Heckler & Koch G3 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The G3 uses an unconventional operating mechanism that was developed from a roller-locking system patented by Edward Stecke of Poland during the 1930s; this was used in the MG-42.
G3 rifles also saw action with the West German police during the tragic Munich Massacre in 1972, in a failed attempt to rescue the Israeli athletes held hostage by the Black September group.
The G3 is of modular construction, based around a stamped steel receiver, a pressed in barrel, and a detachable 'trigger group' which encompasses the handgrip, trigger, and fire selector mechanism.

Ak 4 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was selected as the service rifle of the Swedish Armed Forces during the early 1960s to replace the Swedish Mauser m/96 bolt-action rifle, Carl Gustaf M/45 submachine gun, Ag 42B semi-automatic rifle and the Swedish m/37 Automatic rifle.
The main competitors were a prototype of the Swedish Gram rifle (development of the Ag m/42), the German HK G3 battle rifle, the Belgian FN FAL battle rifle, the American M-14 battle rifle, and the Swiss SIG 510 battle rifle.
After a number of different test in various environments the HK G3 rifle was chosen and modified on 40 accounts and thereafter renamed Ak 4 (in Swedish: Automatkarabin 4, in English "Assault rifle 4").

The main drawback of the G3 and AK4 lies in the choice of caliber: it is a superb weapon as a rifle, but impossible to handle in automatic mode, or even in short bursts.

 HKPRO Exclusive:  The HK41 Rifle
It is the civilian version of the renowned military and law enforcement G3 automatic rifle that was developed and manufactured by Heckler and Koch, GmbH during the mid to late 1950s, and is the precursor to the HK91 semiautomatic rifle that later gained popularity in the United States during the late 1970s and 1980s.
Soon after these semiautomatic G3 rifles were introduced, HandK changed the designation of the semi-automatic “G3” rifle to the “HK41” model number designation in what may have been an attempt to stay one-step in front of changing West German and U.S. gun laws.
Each rifle was enclosed in a fl plastic sleeve that was tied in an overhand knot at both ends to prevent the rifle’s exposure to moisture during storage and shipping.

The rifles were fired after being frozen, baked, immersed in salt water, and buried in mud baths to determine their resistance to the most extreme environmental conditions imaginable.
In early 1990 the Army issued its official conclusions on the comprehensive testing program, stating that the rifle had met all of the requirements of the technical and troop evaluation centers and was ready to be fielded.
So, while the HK-ACR rifle may not be issued in the exact form that it was tested at Fort Benning, it is quite possible that some of the features of the rifle, or possibly its caseless ammunition, could be included in the individual weapon that our troops will carry into the 21st century.

Among the many requirements for the rifle were that it carry 50 rounds of ammunition (to reduce magazine changes), have a flat trajectory through 300 meters (to facilitate rapid aiming), have a high degree of accuracy when firing 3 round bursts (for improved lethality), and weigh less than 10 pounds with 100 rounds of ammunition.
The rifle itself is relatively straightforward (the G11 fires from the "closed bolt" position, and the breech is gas piston operated), with the exception of the rotating breech/chamber cylinder.
The rifle reportedly received high marks and there were no major parts failures experienced on any of the fifteen test weapons used.

Most "metric" pattern rifles had non-folding cocking handles and may or may not have select-fire capability, but as with other light select-fire weapons chambered for 7.62x51mm NATO round, the controllability of the full auto fire is disappointing and shots spread in burst is extremely wide.
