G4 nations - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The G4 is an alliance between India, Germany, Japan and Brazil for the purpose of supporting each other’s bid for permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council.
Unlike similar alliances such as the G7 or G8, where the common denominator was the economy or long term political motives, the G4's primary aim is the coveted permanent member seats on the UN Security Council.
While almost all nations have agreed in principle that the UN needs a revamping which includes expansion, few countries are willing to talk about the exact time frame for such a reorganization.

A proposed solution is to increase the number of permanent members by five, which, in most proposals, would include Japan, Germany, India, Brazil (G4 nations), one seat from Africa (most likely between Nigeria and South Africa), and/or one seat from the Arab League.
This requirement of the United Nations Charter was adopted to address a weakness of the League of Nations since that organization was often unable to respond quickly to crises.
Currently the five members are the only nations permitted to possess nuclear weapons under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, which lacks universal validity, as not all nuclear nations have signed the treaty.
