NewsForge | Review: The new Power Macintosh G5
Even with eight fans in its large, heavily drilled aluminum case, the G5, barely a foot from my chair, can't be heard over the relatively quiet iMac that sits in a corner farther away.
The G5 has three PCI slots, versus four in the G4 towers, two hard drive bays versus four in the G4, and room for only a single optical drive versus two in the G4.
Apple has advertised the G5 as the "the world's fastest PC," but current marketing verbiage refers to "one of the fastest PCs ever built." Apple claims that the G5 smokes Pentium 4 and Xeon processors in any number of benchmarks and application tests.

A source who wishes not to be identified indicated to us that Motorola cancelled further development of the desktop G5 chip over a year ago, and will concentrate on speeding up the current G4 processor architecture.
Another wrinkle to this saga has the G5 being a souped up G4 and code-named the 75xx, instead of the 85xx, that would indicate a different chip generation than the 7470 G4.
The desktop G5 85xx would have shipped at initial speeds of over 1 GHz, and would be a 64-bit processor.

Wired News: Design According to Ive
As the machine rose on a pedestal from the stage at San Francisco's Moscone Center, the crowd of several thousand Mac programmers gathered to witness its launch fell silent, as though in the presence of something mysterious and powerful.
But the man primarily responsible for the stark, minimalist look of the G5, Jonathan Ive, stood quietly at the edge of the crowd, chatting with a couple of colleagues.
Ive, the 36-year-old, British-born designer who heads up Apple's industrial design team, is a quiet-spoken, somewhat shy man. In spite of all his awards and plaudits -- he was recently named Designer of the Year by London's prestigious Design Museum -- he is accessible and friendly, almost egoless.
