G6 howitzer - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
The G6 self propelled howitzer was developed around the ordnance of the G5 howitzer.
Both the G5 and the G6 have been used in the close air support role in place of aircraft, which were often too valuable to risk.
In addition to the logistical mobility afforded by a wheeled chassis, the G6 is protected against counter battery fire and is able to defend itself in an unsecured area.

Howitzers are distinguished from other types of cannon artillery by their trajectory in that they tend to fire at high angles and deliver plunging fire.
In addition to this, the barrel of a howitzer is commonly below 30 calibers (the length of the barrel is less than 30 times as long as the diameter of the bore), whereas other cannon and field guns tend to fire at no more than 45° and have a caliber of 30 or over.
Howitzers are still either towed, or now self-propelled where they mix the maneuverability and to some extent the protection of tanks with their heavy firepower.

The G5 is a South African towed howitzer of 155 mm calibre manufactured by Denel.
Initial versions of it were based on the 45-calibre GC-45 howitzer designed by Gerald Bull, though it has gone through many modifications and variations to reach its latest model; the 52-calibre G5-2000.
It is mounted on a slightly-modified version of a towed chassis design by NORICUM, which also includes a small APU to allow it to dig itself in and move short distances at up to 16 km/h.

 G6-52 155mm SELF-PROPELLED GUN-HOWITZER
Although outwardly resembling South Africa's renowned 155mm G6 wheeled Self-Propelled (SP) artillery system, the G6-52 is substantially different - to such a degree that it is justifiably promoted as an entirely new system.
Although artillery is usually deployed in batteries as described in military doctrine, the G6-52's capability is demonstrated by the fact that a single G6-52 howitzer is able to cover an area of approximately 1 720 square kilometers from a deployment position.
Other than the G6, most Self-Propelled (SP) artillery systems consist of the gun turret mounted on a tracked vehicle.
