G8 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The participants agreed to an annual meeting organized under a rotating presidency, forming what was dubbed the Group of Six (G6) consisting of France, West Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
This was a gesture of appreciation from President Clinton to then-Russian President Boris Yeltsin for pursuing economic reforms, and for their neutrality with respect to the eastward expansion of NATO.
In June 2005 the G8 agreed to launch an international database on paedophiles, expected to be set up by the end of the year.

The G7 is rather a forum whose competence and capability of action rest in great measure on the agreement and will of the participating States.
The G7 Finance monitors the evolution of the world economy and of the economic policies of the principal areas; when necessary, the G7 implements co-ordinated actions to ensure the stability of the international financial system.

G7 December meeting eases Russia dilemma - sources - Boston.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Senior G7 government sources told Reuters on Monday that the December meeting was a way to get around this problem, even though publicly it has been explained variously as a farewell to Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan -- who retires in January -- and an opportunity to monitor sky-high oil prices.
To bridge a lengthy gap between meetings of the narrower G7 finance chiefs and central bankers -- especially at a critical time for the world economy -- G7 agreed to add an extra meeting on December 10 in the UK under the Britain 2005 presidency.
Russian officials attend parts of the existing G7 finance meetings but are not full members of the 30-year-old informal club and are not signatories to its public communiques on the state of the world economy or coordinated policy measures.

 Africa: Sign-On Letter to G7
The focus of the upcoming G7 meetings, therefore, should be on the particular role and responsibilities of the G7 countries themselves.
Specifically, the G7 governments have the power to cancel Africa's oppressive burden of illegitimate foreign debt; the resources to increase investments in human development and especially to fully finance the Global Fund for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; and the influence to redress the structural imbalance in trade relations between rich and poor countries.
Finally, a new partnership between the G7 and African countries must be based on a shift away from the practice of imposing economic policies dictated by G7 governments and the International Financial Institutions.

The statement was a thinly veiled reference to China, which has kept the yuan virtually fixed against the dollar for almost a decade, and to countries such as South Korea and Taiwan that have bought huge volumes of dollars to hold their currencies down.
South Korea also gave the G7 short shrift, saying it did not regard itself as one of those countries that the G7 had suggested were keeping their currencies on too tight a leash.
The G7, however, has largely turned a blind eye to Japan's massive intervention, reasoning that a sharp rise in the yen would undermine Japan's export-led recovery and deepen the deflation that is making it hard for firms to pay their debts.
