A theme in a game like this would surely be distracting and unnecessary, and the player of Onyx faces the geometry of the board and an extremely compact, elegant rule set.
Imagine, for example, that you are in a game in which the players are warlords in medieval Japan.
As far as game design is concerned, however, the big game publishers seem to be intent on marketing theme games, so that it would make sense to develop only theme games.

Some of the games are classics, others are twists on classic games (such as a maze in the shape of a fingerprint, or oddly shaped crosswords with modified rules),and still others are completely original.
The original games are brilliant, and so are the modifications they've made on some of the old favorites.

We have chosen a small set of games, leaving the remaining few behind, with the justification that is easier to pick a game to play from a small number of good options than from a greater number of average choices.
A game called Rosette, invented by Mark Berger in 1975, is based on this concept, but with an attempt to reduce the excessively unstable nature of the game.
Chess, Checkers, and Mancala became extended families of games as a result of centuries of conscious innovation or as a result of accumulated errors in communicating the rules as the games spread.

That is, the game represents some historical (or imaginary) situation, but does not attempt to simulate the factors that were important in resolving that situation.
On the other hand, my games generally are not abstract: the game is affected by the requirements of the scenario, and could not be "re-themed" to represent something quite different with virtually the same mechanics.
In other words, I enjoy games as games rather than as simulations, but do want a correspondence between actions in the game and (some kind of) reality.

Gaming is a highly competitive, $15 billion global market, according to vice president at the Council on Competitiveness Suzy Tichenor, which produced the 2005 HPC Users Conference.
To accurately design serious games — the playing fields, scenarios, characters and their interactions — you need a multidisciplinary, expert team that can turn real-world behaviors into computer models/simulations that accommodate expert and novice players in a spectrum of situations.
