New Georgia Encyclopedia: Georgia Department of Transportation
Department of Transportation (GDOT) plans, constructs, and maintains Georgia's network of highways and bridges, while providing planning and financial support for other transportation systems ranging from airports to mass transit and bicycle trails.
An agency of the state government, GDOT is overseen by a state transportation board that includes representatives from each of Georgia's congressional districts.
To maintain those roadways, GDOT receives the proceeds from the state's motor fuel tax and state appropriations, as well as funds from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

 Georgia Department of Transportation
The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) plans, constructs, and maintains Georgia's network of highways and bridges, while providing planning and financial support for other transportation systems ranging from airports to mass transit and bicycle trails.
Long known primarily for highway construction and maintenance, GDOT has broadened its agenda to include other forms of transportation, as well as such transportation innovations as NaviGAtor, an "intelligent transportation system" developed to minimize congestion and improve safety on urban expressways.
The 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta provided the impetus for development of NaviGAtor, a system of 1,044 highway-monitoring cameras, 63 changeable message signs, and a central traffic management system used to manage 234 miles of expressways.

Brunswick Area Transportation Study Case Study
Although Glynn County would host the new MPO and was its largest stakeholder based on population, an effort was made to structure the policy committee in such a way as to ensure a diversity of opinion, representing the range of stakeholders in the Brunswick area.
In addition to GDOT, and the county and the city, the Jekyll Island Authority and the Georgia Ports Authority were included as voting members of the policy committee.
The biggest challenge that BATS faced initially, according to a GDOT official involved in the MPO formation, was that they were unaccustomed to planning a capital program in a financially constrained environment.

 Georgia DOT's Regional Collector-Distributor System
Item 1.1 is a newspaper article outlining a plan formulated by GDOT in the late 1980's to greatly expand about seventy miles of freeways on the north side of Atlanta by the addition of three-lane collector-distributor (CD) roads on each side of the existing eight and ten lane freeways.
GDOT also stated the traffic volumes on the diagram from the project concept report were incorrect, and blamed Moreland-Altobelli for this, while disclaiming any understanding of how or why these values were calculated as they were.
GDOT has elected to circumvent the legally mandated planning requirements for a project of this nature because they sensibly assume that proper regional planning review of the regional CD system would show that the project is not feasible fiscally or environmentally and therefore is ineligible for federal funding under current federal law.

Additional trips shall be determined by subtracting the gross trip generation of the existing use from the gross trip generation of the proposed use.
GDOT will maintain traffic count information on all signalized intersections within the city limits of Greensboro; therefore, counts at these intersections will not be required as a part of the TIS preparation.

Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) - Hall of Shame | Project for Public Spaces (PPS)
GDOT intends to cut 32-foot (urban) and 50-foot (rural) "clear zones" along over 1500 miles of highways throughout Georgia, destroying thousands of acres of trees.
GDOT cites overall crash and fatality data as the justification for this program, but initial analysis of some sections planned to be cut do not support this effort.
GDOT refuses to listen to citizen groups who have presented analysis to show this program is unjustified and GDOT deserves to be the first organization inducted into the Hall of Shame.

In their view, GDOT designs are not to be second-guessed by local officials and citizen groups.
But for that to be meaningful, GDOT would have to compromise its adherence to the Green Book dictum -- provide a safe high-speed trip -- to also consider aesthetics, pedestrian comfort and the local vision for the affected area.
Because the GDOT controls money legislators are seeking for their districts, traditionally it's been difficult to pass bills that the GDOT opposes.

The Conservation Fund, acting as an intermediary between GDOT and a large timber company, signed a real estate purchase option on the site, allowing GDOT the additional time it needed to conduct biological studies and schedule funding.

Top transportation officials gathered Thursday at Chateau Elan in search of new ways to alleviate congestion in metro Atlanta at the first-ever joint board retreat of the Atlanta Regional Commission, Georgia Department of Transportation and Georgia Regional Transportation Authority.
Several speakers noted that Georgians might be less receptive to either proposal than ever before, given the recent jump in gas prices and the fact that many metro-area counties already have local option sales taxes for transportation purposes.
GDOT Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl provided an update on what the department actually has in the works for fiscal 2006, including more traffic signal synchronization projects, an expansion of the Highway Emergency Response Operators (HERO) program, and the installation of additional lights on interstate ramps, which he said had proven "unpopular" but effective at unsnarling traffic.
