GDSII - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
GDS II stream format, commonly known as GDSII is a database format, which in the integrated circuit industry has been the de facto standard for IC layout data exchange for more than two decades.
GDSII files are considered to be a final output the IC design cycle and are passed to IC foundries for IC fabrication.
Currently (October 2004), many IC design tools are beginning to support a new format, OASIS, which may replace GDSII due to higher data density.

GDSII is a term often used in a generic sense to refer to graphical data in an interchange format.
In the strict sense, GDSII is a specific data format developed and trademarked by CALMA/GE and implies use on a CALMA graphics system.
The term "stream format" is the standard output format for GDSII (or later format) data on the CALMA systems used in data interchange and more accurately describes the data format actually used in interchanges.

This section describes the extensions to the CIF and GDSII formats used by Xic.
The extensions to CIF and GDSII are designed to accommodate the electrical information and certain properties.
GDSII files written in this manner are generally portable to other CAD systems (format extensions appear in the electrical block only), as reading will terminate at the end of the physical block, and the following electrical block will be ignored.

The GDSII file created is of fixed-block size (2048 bytes), and is a proper subset of the stream format.
GDSII further employs user units in terms of number of user units to a meter.
When reading a new GDSII file, the program precision and units should be set to match those that are in the GDSII file, otherwise information may be lost (especially if the program's database precision is less than that of the GDSII Stream file).

 Importing GDSII Files
Note Because the GDSII stream is a block-structured binary file, it can easily be corrupted when transferring the file from one system to another.
The GDSII file format can contain multiple top-level instances that may or may not be related to one another.
Because of this, the GDSII filename may not be identical to the top-level instance name.

What designers really need is a single, integrated system that can take their design straight through the flow from RTL to GDSII with guaranteed performance.
Fueled by their need to keep Wallstreet happy, both Cadence and Synopsys claim to have, or to be close to having, an RTL to GDSII flow that reduces iterations and addresses signal integrity and timing convergence.
To deliver a complete, integrated RTL to GDSII solution that eliminates iterations, guarantees timing, and has the capacity to handle large designs flat, logic and physical design technology must be completely re-designed.

GDSII layers are actually divided into sub-layers called datatypes, which are referenced by a datatype number.

The volume of the data to represent the IC design during the layout design phase has exploded in size, with enormous growth in the size and complexity of the ICs as well as nanometer accurate manufacturing processes.
GDSII has been the industry standard format for representing the Layout data and exchanging layout data between chip design teams, silicon foundries and mask companies.
Among these, the most significant is the GDSII to OASIS converter that has been tested and benchmarked with real life layout data from several semiconductor companies.

The assumption in the first case is that a fractured flat file enters the process, whereas in the second case, a hierarchical GDSII file is passed in.
The industry standard database is GDSII; it is the database that all other databases, including proprietary ones, must stream-out to prior to handing off to the manufacturer.
Selecting tools that operate in GDSII originally not only saves an error-prone data transfer stage, it also ensures that data retains hierarchy, thereby containing file size, and containing it in the correct format for manufacturing.
