 GE 44 Ton Switcher - Locomotives - irritatedVowel.com
The Bachmann GE 44 Ton Switcher is a servicable little model.
Western Maryland Railway had two 44 ton switchers, numbered 75 and 76.
It's a bit on the noisy side, and the detail is, well, rough (raised panel lines, hand rails that attach through doors, fore and aft windows far too small, overscale "chunky" detail, etc), but not too bad from a distance.

 Precious Cargo V2.0
Russ, the engineer, was now on board the 44 ton GE diesel switcher, spotting passenger cars at the car shops in the south end of the yard.
After a couple of minutes Chris heard the air horn on the 44 tonner sound twice, and knew Russ was on the move, heading north with his gondolas.
He's got this business in his blood!" John took a seat on the last empty chair on the deck of the switcher.

 Lionel's postwar 44-ton switcher
GE developed what became known as the diminutive 44-tonner in response to a labor agreement in 1937 that mandated the presence of a fireman on any locomotive weighing at least 90,000 pounds.
All we can say is that these switchers filled a niche for a few years and took their lumps before fading away like a canceled sitcom.
Approximately 350 of these switchers were produced between 1940 and 1956 and sold to railroads throughout the United States.

At 88,000 pounds, the 44 Ton Switcher was designed specifically as the heaviest allowable locomotive for one-man operation.

General Electric built many 45 ton switchers that were purchased by industrial railroads and the U.S. military.
These owners were exempt from federal and union regulations which required two-person crews on any locomotive exceeding 44 ton capacity.
Built by Fairbanks-Morse in June of 1947, first sold to Union Pacific in October of the same year, this switcher was powered by a 2,000 horsepower vertically-opposed piston diesel prime mover.

Trains.com - Spectrum GE 44 ton switcher. Thoughts????
I like my Southern 44 tonner, but it might be a little bit of a sentimental thing, having ridden in the cab of the prototype at a local Atlanta train museum with my then 4 year old son.
I have two 44 tonners and am fond of the real ones and the models.
This of course increases maximum pulling power, but also helps with dead spots on the track--if one 44 tonner hits a dead spot the other one can typically shove it over and keep right on going.

This diesel-electric switcher was built in 1932 by British Thomson-Houston Company for use at Ford Motor Company's plant at Dagenham, Essex* (near London), in the United Kingdom.
Incidentally, it has devolved that British Thompson-Houston's American parent built the 1893 GE #1 which was exhibited at the Chicago Columbian Exposition in that year (she survives at the Museum of Transport in St. Louis, Missouri).

 Destination : Freedom - July 2, 2001
Production reached 300 million tons by 1997, and by the year 2000, a billion tons of ore had been crushed since the plant opened.
The mile-long string of 114 cars bearing nearly 10,000 tons of taconite would travel the three-hour journey through remote woods to Taconite Harbor on Lake Superior, just as the trains have done since the first shipment left Erie Mining in 1957.
Erie became a subsidiary of LTV Steel in 1986, and the name was changed to LTV Steel Mining Co. in 1987.
