GE Transportation Systems will hire nearly 230 people at its locomotive and wind-turbine plants in Western Pennsylvania through expansions the state is helping to fund, economic-development officials said Thursday.
GE Transportation, a $2 billion unit of the General Electric Co., will hire 205 people to work on development of its Evolution Series locomotives, which are designed to cut exhaust emissions to meet new federal standards and are expected to begin regular service on U.S. railroads early next year.
GE Transportation is the largest producer of new diesel locomotives and builds them and components at plants in Erie, where the company has headquarters, and Grove City.
