While EMD was limited to a 3000 hp prime mover for powering their B-B design, the GP40 series, GE had developed a 3300 hp four-axle locomotive within their Universal Locomotive series in 1967, the U33B.
Two years later, GE was able to squeeze another 200 hp out of their prime mover design with the release of the U36B.
GE, already in the game with their U36B, countered with an improved 3600 hp version, the B36-7.

The four 3,600hp U36B's that Conrail purchased from GE in 1976 were originally built for the Auto Train to Seaboard Coast Line specs but were never delivered to AT.
By the late 1980s, many of the SCL details found on these units when CR took delivery of them in 1976 had been replaced with more tradition Conrail features, such as sinclair antennas, plated-over cab windows, and so on.
The third U36B that Conrail acquired is nearing the west-end of famous Rockville Bridge.
The ultimate in four-axle (B-B) locomotive design, the triumph of the Dash 8-40B is in no small part due to the persistence of GE in creating a line of high horsepower four-axle locomotives.

The first diesel locomotive to be dressed in red-white-and-blue was the Century 430, given the product stock number 246.
The paint scheme is based somewhat on that found on Seaboard Coast Line's GEU36B #1776.
TYCO does refer in at least one catalog to this model as Spirit of '76 Seaboard Coast Line, making this the nearest thing to a prototypical offering among these famous model trains.
