What I've been told is that Hobby Center Kato sold all of the Sekisui Kinzoku (IE, Kato) production in their shops in Tokyo and Osaka in Kato boxes (regardless of the US label).
The most notable example of this "gray market" is the batch of Atlas GP7s and GP9s that made it into the USA via a distributor which were in standard Kato packaging.
For once, this is prototype practice, since the U50 has span bolsters and the couplers are attached to these and swing with them...

Installing a DCC Decoder in ConCor GE U50 Diesel Locomotives
The following detailed description covers installation of a Digitrax DZ120 decoder in ConCor GE U50 diesels and the ConCor UP Gas Turbine, as actually performed by the author of this publication, and reflects the experiences encountered during those installations.
The Digitrax DZ120 decoder was chosen because its size allowed a "perfect" fit at the rear of the locomotive frame, the current handling capacity was sufficient, and the FX functions of the DN140 decoder were not required.
You will be cutting a 1/16" deep vertical slot in the side of the upper frame section approximately 5/8" back of the front of the top-most part of the frame, which is approximately 2-3/8" back from the front of the frame.

The radiators on a U50 were however mounted on the outer ends of the hood.
UP returned to GE some time later to order a revised version of the U50 to ride on traded-in C trucks from the 8500hp gas turbines.
Compared to the DD35 and U50, the C855 is a very "busy" looking loco with a design that looks as if it was cobbled together, and they had a distinctive fish-belly tank between the trucks.

Union Pacific Diesel Story, 1934-1982, Part 3
They remained in service for a brief four years, but during their early years, they proved that GE was indeed capable of building reliable diesel road locomotives (Apart from its joint work with Alco, GE's previous expertise in the locomotive field was limited to electric locomotives and very light diesel switchers).
GE 2501 (the later UP 633) was built with a low short hood, a design similar to the low noses EMD had furnished earlier to UP on new GP20s and SD24s.
The GE units also tended to stay on the eastern end of the system, but were used regularly on trains all over the system.

Their running gear was recycled into the GE U50 series of locomotives.
In October 1961, Union Pacific constructed an experimental GTEL of their own, using an Alco PA-2 as a cab, the chassis of a GE W-1 class electric locomotive (bought for scrap from the Great Northern) as the second unit, and an modified turbine prime mover from the 50 to 75 series.

They were developed by GE to fill a perceived need for large power by the involved railroads.
