Topic: GER Class L77

Lower Edmonton - Rolling stock   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
James Holden replaced Worsdell at the GER and experimented with replacing the Joys Valve Gear, considered to be at the root of the performance problems, with Stephenson valve gear.
The class 307 dated from 1956 (refurbished 1960-62) and was mainly used on the Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria service but often swapped routes with the 305 units until being banished from the local lines in the 1970s after one too many incidents with the overhead wires.
The earlier class 313 units that operate on the line through Winchmore Hill and Enfield Chase are visually similar with the main difference being that they are equipped to use third rail DC power in the tunnel to Moorgate.

James Holden, Stephen Holden, Alfred John Hill and Frederick Vernon Russell of the Great Eastern Railway
Some of the extensively-built locomotive classes that came into existence under his aegis may not have been outstanding in performance on the road, or in fuel economy, but they were rugged in design and with their massive working parts have paid handsome dividends in reliability and ease of maintenance.
He had several posts on the GER in the running department and succeeded his father as Locomotive Superintendent in January 1908, but resigned in October 1912 to be succeeded by A.J. Hill.
According to Marshall, Alfred John Hill was born in Peterborough in 1862 and died in Bexhill on 14 March 1927.

The Hill N7 (GER Class L77) 0-6-2T Locomotives
Although the Great Eastern Railway's (GER) London suburban services were amongst the most intense and heavily loaded in the country, the GER operated them with relatively small 2-4-2Ts in the early 1900s.
These were all to the original GER design, although the superheaters were increased in size to 18 elements.
Condensing gear was fitted to all of the GER locomotives, but was removed from many locomotives during LNER ownership.
