Thought experiment - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In philosophy, physics, and other fields, a thought experiment (from the German term Gedankenexperiment, coined by Ernst Mach) is an attempt to solve a problem using the power of human imagination.
Thought experiments have been used to pose questions in philosophy at least since Greek antiquity; a famous example is Plato's cave, but others pre-date Socrates.
In physics and other sciences many famous thought experiments date from the nineteenth and especially the twentieth century, but examples can be found at least as early as Galileo.

Washita '92 Experiment   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Washita '92 was a cooperative experiment between NASA, USDA, several other government agencies and universities to test the usefulness of remotely sensed data in hydrologic modeling.
The primary goal during the experiment was to collect a time series of spatially distributed hydrologic data, focusing on soil moisture and evaporative fluxes, using both conventional and remotely sensed methods.
Other specific goals during the experiment included the testing and verification of several new remote sensing devices and the development of data bases for target-sensor interaction algorithms.

The objective of the experiment is to (a) validate the deployment of a 14 meter, inflatable parabolic reflector structure, (b) measure the reflector surface accuracy, and (c) investigate structural damping characteristics under operational conditions.
Promising experiments are then funded through a Phase B that results in the experiment preliminary design, the Phase C/D program plan, and associated cost estimates, which is the basis of the data presented to the Non-Advocate Review Board.
For the experiment, it is planned to use the SAMS to make accuracy measurements of subscale reflectors and compare results with the laser measurements of the same subscale reflectors.

Line experiments in general benefit from having as many BB pairs as possible, as this maximizes the observing efficiency by allowing many lines (as well as the continuum) to be observed at once.
This may be a significant consideration for experiments that require large numbers of channels but can live with the lower sensitivity (which goes down by the same factor), and for observations (like large surveys) which require very short dump times.

While operational model functions have been developed at C-band (5.3 GHz) and Ku-band (14 GHz), a complete study of the frequency dependence of the model function has not be done.
For this experiment, this system will be augmented by two additional fixed radars, six wire wave gauges and a 3-axis anemometer supplied by CCIW, and an experimental 3-axis hot-wire anemometer and a 3-wire wave gauge from BYU.

To overcome this situation, a dedicated geodetic VLBI experiment was carried out by the EVN in November 2000, with the aim of improving those poorly known telescope positions.
The option of observing with a single telescope (antenna 7) at Westerbork was preferred to using the phased-array because the effective phase centre of the array (and therefore the geodetic position) might vary when the array configuration is changed, for example if some antennas are switched in or out of the array.
This scheme differs from that used in standard geodetic experiments where new zenith troposperic delays are estimated at much shorter time intervals, but was preferred for this specific dataset to limit the number of estimated parameters.

The signal at the frequency of 2.856 GHz was used as a references, since its amplitude does not depend on the bunch length.
One also could see that analysis of high frequencies close to 20 GHz is needed to characterize the ATF beam, with a typical bunch length of the order of a few picoseconds.
