Bill of Rights or Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 provided for college or vocational education for returning World War II veterans (commonly referred to as GIs or G. I.s) as well as one year of unemployment compensation.
The G. Bill was created to prevent a repeat of the Bonus March of 1932 and a relapse into the Great Depression after World War II ended.
Libertarians assert that the GI bill has been based on the assumption that in the absence of the bill, people would have done nothing, and that the GI bill only shifted educational training from direct programs such as apprenticeships to college programs.

When I went to college on the GI Bill, Uncle Sam, like any good parent or guardian, made sure we were good students — going to class, doing our homework, etc. We were warned we could be removed from the program for any continued infractions.
The World War II GI Bill brought great benefits not only to veterans like myself who were among the first members of their families to attend college but to the nation's educational system and eventually to the entire nation.
