  GRAPHICS: GIF files
GIF files incorporate a compression scheme to keep file sizes at a minimum, and they are limited to 8-bit (256 or fewer colors) color palettes.
The strategy is to reduce the number of colors in your GIF image to the minimum number necessary and to remove stray colors that are not required to represent the image.
GIF animations are rarely used in a meaningful way, and generally distract readers from the main content of the page.

The GIF file format   (Site not responding. Last check: )
GIF is a file format that should not really be used for prepress, it is far more suited for web design or to exchange images through e-mail or newsgroups.
A GIF image can contain 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128 or 256 colours which are stored in a colour palette or colour table within the image file.
GIF supports LZW compression, which is a lossless compression algorithms that is also used frequently in prepress (TIFF images are often compressed using LZW).

Governance Interoperability Framework   (Site not responding. Last check: )
GIF enables and simplifies governance, compliance and policy-driven solutions for an enterprise SOA.
GIF provides transparency and visibility into all aspects of an enterprise SOA, offering managers, developers and architects a simple view of all functional and non-functional information related to a business service.
Through the GIF technology, partners have the ability to publish services and associated policies to the BSR in a standardized way, to be alerted on changes within the BSR, and have access to metadata about the range of services that make up the customer’s SOA.

Preparing Graphics for The Web - GIF File Format   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Although the GIF specification allows for 2-color GIFs to consist of any two colors, I have been unsuccessful in creating 2-color GIFs which contain anything other than fl and white using the software at my disposal.
Each color in the GIF color table is described in terms of Red, Green and Blue (RGB) values, with each value having a range of 0 to 255.
Therefore, like the JPEG format, the GIF format has access to over 16.8 million colors, yet a maximum of 256 colors out of a possible 16.8 million can be referenced within a single GIF image.

The GIF Controversy: A Software Developer's Perspective (lzw.info)
GIF is not alone in the use of LZW.
Possibly in part as a reaction to commercial developers splitting GIF code from their commercial applications and making available the GIF code through free distribution channels, Unisys later clarified that commercial developers in general would be subject to the minimum royalty ($0.10) even on software distributed for free.
As for the renewed proposal to "burn all GIFs" and replace them with a format such as PNG, that is not yet completely possible, because PNG does not support animation, which is widely used with GIF.

 GIF Image File Format
GIF was a great match for the old 8 bit 256 color video boards, but is inappropriate for today's 24 bit photo images.
If GIF is used for continuous tone photo images, the limited color can be poor, and the 256 color file is quite large as compared to JPG compression, even though it is 8 bit data instead of 24 bits.
GIF optionally offers transparent backgrounds, where one palette color is declared transparent, so that the background can show through it.

DTA would be very useful for GIF animations because it can read a directory full of GIF files, calculate a single, optimized color palette, and then re-write the GIF files with the new, optimized palette - a big time saver.

 GIF: Graphics Interchange Format(sm)
In general, the graphics in a Data Stream are assumed to be related to some degree, and to share some control information; it is recommended that encoders attempt to group together related graphics in order to minimize hardware changes during processing and to minimize control information overhead.
In that case, the decoder may use a color table with as many colors as its hardware is able to support; it is recommended that such a table have fl and white as its first two entries, so that monochrome images can be rendered adequately.

In practice, Unisys has not required users of GIF images to obtain a license, although their licensing statement indicates that it is a requirement.

Meanwhile, many GIF downloaders and Web site builders on the Web continue to be ignorant of or indifferent to the requirement to get a license from Unisys for the use of their algorithm.

However, GIF has lost ground to the JPEG format when it comes to photos.

CompuServe developed GIF in 1987, calling it GIF87, and two years later added new features such as interlacing, transparency, and animation to create the format known as GIF89a.

Why There Are No GIF files on GNU Web Pages
There are no GIFs on the GNU web site because of the patents (Unisys and IBM) covering the LZW compression algorithm which is used in making GIF files.
Perhaps this means we could include a GIF program on our CD-ROM and claim to be acting within the scope of the Unisys permission—or perhaps not.
It is also possible to create GIFs using a patent-free run length encoding but this doesn't achieve the compression that one normally expects in a GIF.

Unisys is charging web sites $5000 or more to use these now-obsolete GIF graphics if the software originally used to create the GIFs was not covered by a Unisys license.
The catch is that it appears to be difficult or impossible to get a Unisys license to use LZW in free software that complies with the Open Source Definition or in low-volume proprietary software.
